How To Teach Rudiments To Young Drummers On A Drum Kit

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Teachers of percussion instruments frequently try to synthesize various percussion techniques to facilitate training. For example, there is a technique of giving your own knowledge, which is good for using on the first steps. Many young drummers do not have interest for studying rudiments. Explain to them the importance of rudimentary technique acquirement and do not also limit their creative impulses: it is very undesirable, when it is not allowed to the student to improvise with rudiments.

Good preparation allows adapting and using any rudiment playing drum kit, but beginners should learn them playing a small drum. Today, absolute majority of children starts to practise music after having heard plenty of rock. That’s why you should resolve the monumental task: to propagate importance of a small drum preventing slumping of interest. It is hard, because children want to play drum kit, as real musicians in rock groups.

Only after they acquire knowledge in playing a small drum, show them the ways of using rudiments when playing a drum kit.

For example, base rudimental rolls and single and double stroke rolls are also a base for a drum kit. Series of Swiss Triplet (RLL or RRL) followed by swinging eighth notes are basic jazz techniques, which give syncopated rhythmic sensation. Listen to drumming of Mel Lewis. Grace notes are also very widely used during drum kit playing.

Say to your pupils that solid rudimental grounding is very important and will bring them dividends. They should be able to play rudiments without reflecting for playing very much from the heart and with correct dynamics, drummer should feel a music stream without distracting on thinking about movements.

And we are sure, that drummers need to play rudiments during the whole life, at least for a warming up. As, for example, other musicians play scales.

Remember, that if pupils play rudiments on a drum kit with an excessive control over visual similarity of blows, their game will become hard and trivial. Rudiments need to be played “naturally”, and pupils should understand that control does not depend on the degree of intensity, but on that of relaxing. They should keep correct position, be relaxed, get good control and sensation, and only then try to play by heart.

Playing rudiments over various Latin ostinato legs patterns helps very much to develop independence of extremities and gives good control over hands and legs during playing a drum kit, which you need for improvisations.

Rudiments allow playing better and more creatively because of good technical skills. Drummers should play them musically with dynamics, expression, imagination and good sensation of time.

When your pupils reach that moment when rudiments become automatic continuation of their thought, they will begin to play absolutely freely everything that comes to their mind.

How Do Drummer’s Legs Work?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

As the pedals for a drum bass develop, using of two bass drums strongly entered into numerous musical styles, such as funk, fusion, rock, metal and progressive rock. In spite of the fact that drummers have play two bass drums for many years already, development of this technique can be an extremely difficult problem.

For developing muscular memory and coordination, which you need for using your extremities independently, balancing on a small chair, you should apply much effort. Playing two bass drums demands development of certain skills, our body creates thousands of neurologic tracks to co-ordinate electric signals from brain to extremities. Thousands of neuromuscular links occur simultaneously, signal is sent to our leg, synchronizes our movements, using a backbone for balance, and allowing our hands to make various movements. Regardless of whether you play using “heel-up” or “heel-down” techniques or combine both variants, many muscles of your leg should be developed.

Every time when we discuss various playing techniques, such as “heel-up” or “heel-down”, we usually concentrate on those muscles of a leg which allow us to do these movements. But we usually say nothing about such group of muscles, which is a basis and supports functional work of all the other muscles.

Basic muscles. This is a group of muscles, which is also known as lumbo-pelvic-hip. There are 29 various muscles, which make a complex lumbo-pelvic-hip. This group works as an integrated functional unit, allowing kinetic chain (muscles from foot to a backbone) to increase force, to reduce force and to stabilize dynamics of the blow. This group of muscles provides optimum neuromuscular efficiency in kinetic chain, considering maximum acceleration, deceleration and dynamic stabilization during movements.

Heel down. There are four groups of muscles in addition to basic, which work synchronously allowing your leg and anklebone to press on a drum pedal, when using the heel down technique. For making a mallet to do a swing, foot pique should rise up while the heel remains on a floor. For this action tibial muscle activates. Tibialis anterior straightens and supinates foot. Tibialis posterior bends and supinates foot and the muscles straightening toes. To strike plastic the foot should make the movement downwards, heel remains on a floor. For making the movement downwards, salens muscle activates. It bends foot and muscles, which in their turn bend toes.

Heel up. The groups of muscles used for playing making use of this technique differ a little from those, which are used for heel down playing. There are iliopsoas muscle, soleus and tibialis muscles. These muscles also work together with the basic group of muscles, for maintenance backbone’s stability and balance. Hip flexors lift a foot, releasing a pedal and allowing mallet to move aside plastic. Foot flexors push leg to press a pedal and to strike a plastic. Tibialis muscles finish a cycle.

Acquirement of bass drum technique demands to develop all basic leg’s muscles. As a drummer, you should remember that strong muscles are a basis of good playing!

Do You Want To Hear Your Drums? Buy Earplugs!

Monday, May 17th, 2010

If you decided to check up your hearing, you can get a nasty shock. You think that everything is OK, but audiogram shows that you have no perception of sounds near 10 kHz by one of your ears. And you did not notice this, but it is already a step to big problems. Of course, you will decide to do something, but what level of protection is necessary for you? May be “-9 dB” will not be enough for you. And “-25 dB” can be really too much. Everything depends on loudness and duration of influence.

Top loudness of your group can reach even 140 dB, but an average level for rehearsal is, for example, near 100 dB. It is difficult enough to understand the danger of decibels in numerical measurement. Because dependence is absolutely non-linear – every time when music becomes louder by 3 dB, it means that loudness increased in 2 times! And a time for safe listening is reduced by two as well. As you can see, everything depends very strongly on how loud it is, and how much time influence was carried out. Read, for example, official norms for a workplace: 8 hours with influence of 85 Db, 4 hours with 88 Db, 2 hours with 91 Db etc. 103 Db are permitted to be listened to only during 7,5 minutes and when we give 108 Db, two bars with a brake is all, that you will be allowed to play per day. It is not recommended to be influenced by more than 85 Db during 8 hours per day, so if your group plays at 100 Db, and you use “-15 Db” protection, you can play for 8 hours, and without this protection, we remind you, you can drum only for 15 minutes. That’s why it is important to choose protection directly for your concrete case, as your feeling of music, accuracy of playing and control should not suffer, but at the same time you should take care of your ears.

At first sight, professional protection of ears costs much, but when you will choose a new couple of crashes to buy, remember that protecting ears now, you can enjoy your instruments and music in the whole much longer in the future.

You must know, that small drum can sound so sharp and high that it will harm ears, and not only because of its loudness, but also because of a narrow spectrum of sounding. Ears simply have no time for closing. You can go to the concert once or train during a week and have healthy ears, but if you are going to earn your living drumming in a group, of course, you will need protection. Use protection during rehearsals and sound checks.

Tragedy Of Hearing Loss For Drummer

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Hearing loss comes gradually. Sometimes we do not notice anything till the last moment, but if you play drums or listen to loud music during a long time, you can be assured that your hearing weakens…

For example, such legend-man as George Martin had to desert the stage because of hearing loss.

Hearing cannot be restored by itself. If hearing is harmed, there’s nothing that can be done and there’s no return. Fortunately, our brain is capable of adapting, and now there are techniques, which can reduce some consequences of the trauma.

The majority of people think that “impairment of hearing” is a condition, when you become deaf. Usually, on the contrary, you start to hear too much. Let’s take, for example, ringing in the ears. Yes, everyone had it after some concert or dancing in club. Then you go to bed and hear it. This is a warning sign to all of us, but we do not pay attention to it, because next morning it gets cleared away.

But for someone morning passes, but ringing remains. And in some days you understand that things are in a bad way and also that this ringing will not leave you any more. Moreover, the horror is in fact that actually nothing is possible to do; you can only stop further progressing.

Nobody knows what actually happens. Some doctors say that damage of hair follicles in an internal ear plays the main role, but in fact it is necessary to understand ears as conductor of information to brain. Look, for example, it’s not eyes that see everything around you, but it is the brain that interprets signals from eyes and produces images. It is the same with hearing. If the mechanism of sending signals to the brain is damaged, of course, it will influence hearing.

So you must understand whether it is an ear or perception of a signal is damaged. But it is not always possible. In the most extreme cases, when surgeon ablates acoustical nerve, so that people could not hear this ringing any more, after operation (which leaves patient deaf) some of them still have this sound, when for other people procedure passed successfully. So, unfortunately, we do not know details and come to terms with what happened.

Long-term exposure to loud sounds is known to damage hearing of musicians, especially drummers. Fortunately, now idols of youth use protection methods and say about it in interviews, that’s why because of a positive example young drummers start taking care of their hearing, but psychological barrier is still too strong. Still those people, who already have problems, use earplugs more, than healthy musicians. So, a young drummer, take this information seriously and do not neglect protection earplugs during concerts and trainings.

“Flying Sticks” And What To Do With Them

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I think everyone once came up against a problem of stick’s slipping out of your hands when playing drums.

At first, they slip out quite often, and this is normal, you can overcome this. It is necessary to do warm-up, to develop grasping skills. There are special exercises, which many drummers do not give themselves the trouble to do. Keep one stick in your belt just to be on the safe side, you will take out quickly (it is much more inconvenient to take out a stick from a cover) or put one pair of sticks in the holder on hat.

Sticks can slip out, when you divert your attention away from the process of playing. If during playing you think about evening prospects, you can expect trouble. When you become thoughtful, it is possible to notice by peripheral vision evading guitarist. But if you have good concentration, sticks usually do not slip out. Watch yourself, especially if you already know how painful it is, when a stick beats you in your forehead, in an eyebrow or even an eye.

If you have only started playing drums and, reading about possible traumas, start to hesitate, whether it is safe to continue, reject fear and simply be concentrated. Remember an old joke about chess? Chess is a dangerous game. It is possible to fall asleep, decline your head and to pluck out your eye by the king.

When you lose a stick the main problem is embarrassment (especially if it happens very seldom). Probably, during rehearsals it is useful to sometimes “lose” a stick and to train getting a new one. I think, in a critical situation (during concert) this experience will help to react, not to become frightened and not to get out of time. It is necessary to continue playing the same rhythm only without hat or rid, until you pick up a stick or take another one.

Find a comfortable grip for you. Gripping a stick your hand should be constantly relaxed. Or after drumming one song, during playing the second you physically could not keep it. The hand can become numb and you will need at least half a minute before pain gets better, but there can be a situation, when you do not have this time. Your hand should be relaxed but tenacious not to lose control. This is just a matter of practice. The more you practise, the less often sticks slip out.

There is one more nuance. Try to play different drum kit as often as possible. We tune up our drums for comfort. But if you get used to play only your drum kit, it is hard to play another instrument, for example, that one, which is in rehearsal base.

Hand Force For Modern Drummer

Monday, May 17th, 2010

It is an open secret that playing drums needs greater physical effort, than playing any other instrument. That’s why drummers are predisposed to traumas. Some drummers can play during many decades without traumas. But unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. It does not matter, whether you are a beginner or a professional, anyone can be traumatized while playing.

One of the most widespread maladies of drummers is a pain in “external” part of an elbow. Why does one get it? Repeating up / down movement involves in process not only extensor of a wrist and a group of flexors, but also many other small hand muscles, which are responsible for motor movements of a hand and fingers. Grip of a stick, position of a body and arrangement of your drum kit are the factors, to which it is necessary to pay attention for preventing a painful feelings in “external” part of an elbow.

If you start to feel spasms in a hand or pain in elbows and forearms, lower the tempo of playing, or change your technique. It is useful to make a break in playing. Only if you do not feel these pains any more, continue to play, if pain repeats, consult a doctor.

Ice applying to the injured place can be the first aid, if you get such a trauma. As soon as inflammation goes down, massage this place, and do some therapeutic exercises. Though each case is individual, on the average, you need no more than several weeks to solve the problem. The main thing is: do not use self-treatment, address an expert.

The best way not to get a trauma is prevention of it. Muscles and sinews which are flexible and strong have fewer chances to become damaged. Now we will tell you about some exercises, which can be useful for you.

Here is the simplest exercise. Toughen and relax hand muscles, for example, toughen a hand on a breath, keep a muscle toughened during 7 seconds, then do an exhalation and relax it, then do the same with another hand.

Do exercises for muscle stretching. Serially describe arcs by hands over your head. This will remove stress from brachial muscles. Make this exercise until you feel comfortable. Then change direction of movements. After that join hands together and stretch them above your head, then hold your arms from behind, as far as possible. Hands should remain straightened.

Stretch one hand before you palm up, then take a hand and pull it down as intensively as it is possible. Repeat during 20 seconds 3 times.

It is useful to train muscles using dumbbells. Do exercises 3 times making 15-20 repetitions.

Remember that you are not bodybuilder, that’s why you do not need big muscles, you need force for good playing.

What Is Lap Pad And Is It Useful?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

In a life of every drummer there are such recurring problems as impossibility of training at home. Someone chooses the cheapest variant of breaking an impasse, which also does not need any costs. Drum on everything that is on tap, it can be cushions, stools etc.

As a decision of this problem you can use special training “drums” – pads. It is possible to make them, if you can fasten some layers of linoleum, but it is better to buy qualitative and adapted for playing variant. They are made of rubber with different rigidity, which is fastened to the base made of different materials. There are also kevlar plastics… In general there are a lot of types. But all of them are united by such characteristic as absence of high loudness during training that allows playing out of the soundproof room, for example, at home.

Every pad made by different producers has its positive and negative sides, and every pad has its appropriation. One has two sides of different rigidity; another one you can buy with a stand; the third one is simply big and heavy durable pad.

In this review we would like to give you information about such type of pads, which is possible to take with you anywhere, these are the so-called “lap pads”. They are compact and have a small strap for fastening on your leg. This instrument will help you during journeys, when you can’t take with you usual pad with a stand. Or before performance there is always a possibility to train. Such pad is possible to use for training hands technique, using pad it is better to watch correctness of hands and fingers’ movements, correctness of training, to oversee your feelings and bounce because sound does not prevent from doing this. Play on pad single stroke rudiments rlrlrlrl, double stroke rudiments rrllrrllrrll, paradiddles RlrrLrll and all the other rudiments. It is possible to train playing by fingers, rim shot, push pull.

There are different types of pads. Some of them are big enough and couldn’t get into an average pocket of a bag, but there are also such types which you can keep even in a pocket of jeans. First of all this distinction is caused by presence on a round plastic platform of big lap pad a protuberance in the form of a cross made for comfort, thanks to it fixed on a knee pad is raised a little and inclined to the drummer. Small pad has no any rack, but it is double-sided. One side is soft, and another is rigid, so turning it over during playing you get different bounce, so there are two pads in one, and the soft side sounds lower, than the hard one.

Whatever type of pad you choose, it will be useful for you.

What Is Warming-up For An Inexperienced Drummer?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Many drummers begin training by gripping a stick at once, sitting down on a chair and starting to wave hands. They strain themselves very much during the first five or six songs, then their muscles get used to playing and only then it starts to sound better.

If such relation to playing becomes a habit, it can lead to pitiable results. If you play without warming up, you can’t give all the best and listeners will feel it.

You should be prepared for playing as well as it is possible – this is a postulate of this article.

Some drummers in an interview say to journalists that they never train at home. Maybe it sounds cool, but we think that such declarations are unpedagogic, because young susceptible drummers will think “Buddy Rich does not play at home, so why should I do this?” We can say in this situation that only when you are such a good drummer as Buddy Rich is, then you will not need trainings at home, but now work hard, children!

The same we can hear about warm-ups: some drummers, for example Richie Hayward, think that it is not necessary, but we claim the contrary. Why? Because warm-up always helps you to play better.

Warm-up relaxes your muscles and prepares them for playing. You never race one another without limbering up, do you? This also concerns playing; you should always limber up your hands before taking sticks. Do not risk your health and impression of your listeners. Enter a warming up into system of your training.

Do exercise on warming up of muscle of thorax and back: join hands from behind and lift them to your head, keeping it straight.

There is another effective exercise: straight your hands down the sides of your body palms up and slowly lift them up, until you turn to “cross”. During making of this exercise you should feel a tension of bicepses. If you feel it, you do it correctly.

After exercises examine your hands, they became warmer, didn’t they? And you should feel energy. Well, now you can take sticks into your hands.

Now you should do exercises with sticks.

Play fourth notes using only your right hand (it is especially useful for lefthanders). If you use this exercise for a warming up of muscles, relax and keep up comfortable speed and do it during such time cell, which will not overwork you. Using it for work out muscles, do exercises with the greatest speed, which you can keep, until your muscles “catch fire”, continue playing even overcoming your pain. Adding this exercise in the program of your trainings at home, you will see improvement of your technique in a week, if you do all that we advice you daily.

The Most Frequent Drummer’s Mistakes

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Everyone makes mistakes, but if you know about it beforehand, you will not drop a brick.

Be critical. Of course, there is nothing more interesting, than creating polyrhythmic drawings in with a capable drummer. However it is not always good.

Sometimes a drummer, who can easily make polyrhythmic parts, can do enormous things with the odd times and tangled tunes, can’t give you an accurate rhythm. If somebody from your group asks you to accompany him on bass drum with accent on a downbeat by cymbal, do not refuse, because this is too obvious, and you try to avoid clichés. Why? Because you should understand that sometimes we need clichés. It works, that’s why this turned to it.

There is another mistake, which is connected with the previous one, but concerns more general aspects of playing. Musicians of group depend upon a drummer not only in beat. It is necessary to be able to accentuate timbre’s changes from one part to another, increased dynamics, strong ends, and the role of connecting links should be felt in fillings. At first sight it seems simple, but you will be pleasantly surprised, when you learn to notice such interesting nuances.

Do not make your part too piled. This is a very obvious thing. But why do so many drummers continue doing this? Possibly, this is because many drummers for years train on elastic pads, and do not pay attention to a musical component.

Sometimes even very competent drummers have a craving for untimely insertions. It could be a crash in the middle of a phrase, a jazz syncope in a ballad or vocal accompaniment by double bass drums. It’s not a technique, this is a problem of taste.

All the drummers realize the necessity of improving technical skills. But many of great musicians do not have perfected technique. They have cool ideas. It is possible to be highly skilled, qualified drummer, but for creating something new you need another talent. And it does not come through legs and hands training, this can be only in your head and heart.

Also do not simplify a part. Many drummers play simple parties, making an accent on time accuracy. But, it is not enough for really good playing and do not wait for a fire from a group in this situation. And listeners will be bored.

And the biggest mistake is a lack of confidence. There is nothing worse, than drummer on casting. Drummer should be a leader. Drum is so powerful instrument that drummer can be screened out. Good drummer in weak group can change it out of all recognition. But it is also true that weak drummer can transform eminent collective into a small group of children playing in sandbox.

5 Typical Mistakes Which Strongly Influence Quality Of Drumming

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Mistake №1. Perception of music only for your instrument.

Everyone prefers music, which represents our instrument in its beauty. A problem of drummer is approach to the vision of a part. It means that a drummer first of all thinks about how he will play, instead of thinking about how the line of drums will accentuate music. Music should be in the first place, and magnificent drum part should be only one of its necessary components. Listen to good music, and not only just good drummers.

Mistake №2. Disinclination for learning a song.

Unlike other musicians, a drummer does not learn scales, solfeggio. We perfect our technique. But there is a minus of such approach; it does not allow creating part in an orchestral manner. Because there is not any necessity to remember all the changes of chords, drummers feel time using bit, but it is better to keep in mind phrases, which are dictated by the arrangement. It allows telling a story playing song.

That is why many admire Ringo Star’s playing, while others hold up their hands without understanding, why he is so good. How is it possible to be a great drummer having such a limited technique and simple ideas? The reason is Ringo’s unusual ability of playing suitable accompaniment to a song. The part A successfully combined with a part B, which brings the listener to final part C. This is a very subtle nuance, but also very weighty.

Mistake №3. Incorrectly chosen tempo.

The basis of concept groove is correctly chosen speed. This is more than simply play accurately in time. You need tempo, allowing other musicians to feel comfortable.

The majority of drummers like to play in tempo, which is convenient only for them. That is why it is necessary to experiment also in a writing songs.

Try to create different parts, each part, using different speed. With the lapse of time you will understand, what tempo is good for each specific song. You will not get this discovery during playing. But you can feel this playing instrument, for which the song was created, because a composer feels true tempo during writing.

Mistake №4. Excessive stratifying of bit for giving more intensity.

Tony Williams was the master of these things. But playing musical “patterns”, which are too far from the basic bit, does not give anything, except dipping musical theme in chaos and rush. You can think that you make it hot, while colleagues in group think that you have a wild sounding.

Mistake №5. Intentional retarding of bit for groove deepening.

It does not help in the majority of situations. This can be acceptable, if musicians feel time well. But you risk turning too deep groove into a grave.

What Influences A Sound Of Bass Drum?

Bass drum is a cylindrical shell, shut from two sides by resounding membrane (plastic). Blow in plastic sends a column of air in the direction to other plastic, which starts to vibrate after a very short interval (as a rule, there is one or two milliseconds). These plastics can be tuned up. When a drummer strikes them, they vibrate with the fixed frequency which depends on the tension. If the tension of plastics and their weight are identical, height of their sounding is also identical. Identical tuning up of plastics gives the chance to get the fullest sound from a drum. If plastics are tuned up not equally, they will sound with different height that, as a rule, gives a mixed sound.

But actually this is not so simple. Percussive plastic much more influences a sound than resonant plastic. The proportion of plastic’s influence depends on the depth of a drum, type of plastic and the blow on it. Vibration of percussive plastic after blow is sharper (fast attack), while resounding plastic has slower attack and its sounding is wider.

Also plastics can have different weight. They can include damping rings which weaken certain overtones and change height of a basic musical tone. Such damping rings can be different for percussive and resounding plastics. Also one or both plastics can have an aperture. And, at last, there is the third element of “system” which can change sounding; this is a shell of a drum.

As you see, there are many possibilities to change a drum sound. It explains why bass drum of every drummer gives the unique sounding. The same drum can also sound absolutely differently, if you change premise or even move furniture.

Dimensions, of course, have an influence on a sound. For example, can a bass drum be too big for effective functioning? Of course, yes. Big drum needs more energy for transferring a blow to resounding plastic, and it can be not enough of energy of a beater. This problem is identical both for very big, and for too deep drums, but for various reasons.

Is depth really important for sound height? Yes, to some extent. But effect is not so important for frequency of a sound, as for the general sounding. Listen to a record of a bass drum or a bass guitar, tuned up a bass on an equalizer. The sound becomes richer and deeper, but its actual height of a sound does not change. Low overtones grow louder, adding “weight” to a sound. The Same effect gives increasing of depth of a bass drum. But in this situation there is a possibility of choice. The less is the depth of a drum, the more sensitive it is, because a delay between the moment of a beater’s touch to a plastic and a sound, which follow this blow, is shorter. That’s why those drums, which have smaller depth, easy answer a blow and, that’s why, it is more sensitive.

Dimensions Of Bass Drums And Its Sound

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Will the bass drum of big diameter, for example 24″ or even 26″ suit you? By the account how well big bass drums sell recently, many drummers will answer this question in the affirmative. But what to do, if it is better to have a sound of deeper than standard 16″ х 22″ drum for your musical needs? And what to do with 18-inch bass drums? There are many such small drums. Can they give a hundred and ten per cent?

Let’s return to the beginning of the 20th century. At that time “bass drum” meant either an orchestral or marching drum, and both of them had modest depth, but much bigger diameter, than modern bass drums have. First rather practical pedal for a bass drum was devised and mounted in 1909. Bass Drums as a part of drum kits remained big and shallow during following 40 years for a variety of reasons. First of all, in the first half of the 20th century musical styles were not casted into the melting pot, which were in the second half of the century. That’s why trying to get various sounding was not the main motive power of drums designing. Secondly, drummers did not use microphones, and big drums were needed simply for high level of loudness.

But all changed after the Second World War, when big dancing bands, which were popular earlier made way for small musical groups. Longing to be heard as a member of big orchestra ceased to be a need of paramount importance. At the same time those drummers, who especially loved experiments and played in bebop collectives, searched for a new sounding. They found this sounding in smaller bass drums with diameter 18″ and 20″, which can be tuned up on a strong and penetrative sound.

When on a musical Olympus rock music started to dominate, all drum kits were completed with these small bass drums. But soon drummers began to want great variety of sounding and, probably, more attractive look of the bass drums. So, diameters 22″and 24″ became a standard. It is interesting that during all these changes it made little account of depth of a bass drum. Till the middle of 70-ies the majority of bass drums had depth 14″, no matter, what diameter it had. Some time later standard drums had a depth 16″, this standard was valid during next twenty years.

So, what do we have as a result? It seems to be that now evolution simultaneously goes in two directions: both double bass drums, and small bass drums risersare popular. But size 16″ х 22″ inch is still used for the majority of kits «for beginners».

Different dimensions of bass drums show existing tendencies in music world, and skilled drummers understand that there are no standards any more and this is good! Now drummers use everything that suits music and corresponds to a certain manner of playing.

Now assortment of bass drums is very wide: diameter can be from 16″ to 26″, and depth can be from 14″ to 20″. So, you only need to choose from this variety a suitable drum.

How To Make A Small Drum

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Every drummer sometimes overturns a small drum upside down and has a good look at its interior through transparent lower plastic, being perplexed, why so many people think, that drum producing is such a difficult science. Really, its structure is not too complicated at all: it is a round tub with various metal elements fastened to it. But appearances are deceptive. Actually, geometry thanks to which a small drum is so famous has developed during the centuries by trial and error.

We decided to show you, what producers of drums should do to give you a possibility of getting delightful sound. Of course, we do not think, that you will run to buy necessary details and equipment, and that you will make your own small drum (but you can try, of course). We only want to show, how deceptive outward simplicity of this difficult instrument is.

The first step is a formation of shell and cutting it making a detail of necessary sizes. Then we measure shell and an external covering and cut it off until it has the necessary size. Both covering and shell you should polish by emery paper before glueing, because rough surfaces promote best coupling. Then we couple both pieces and roll them together to provide stronger coupling.

After bonding, we seal joints, this process is one of the major moments during superimposing of coating. Junction should be strong and durable, that’s why use special chemical, which alloys edges together.

Then cut off excesses of coating by small manual cutter. This is a fast phase in technological process.

Then edges are cut off. Using two different milling heads, we cut off edges four times to get an external cut on-the-miter 45 degrees and an internal cut on an opposite side, which will be connected with a plastic contour. Our purpose is creating such an edge, through which vibration would be effectively transferred from plastic to shell.

Then prepare drum for marking and drilling, fastening adhesive tape to strategically important sections of shell. Tape allows drawing a line and drilling points in those places, where various metal elements will be fastened, and also helps to drill a shell purely, with a minimum splitting. This process demands accuracy. If marking on a shell is made incorrectly, this can become a fatal mistake.

Using a chopping knife make grooves for springs. When we cut out grooves, we also use a file to make contours of dredging smooth. As a result you will see unnoticeable grooves by which drum strings are drawn up to plastic for the maximum effect.

Then polish edges using abrasive paper of two different numbers to make them as smooth as possible.

When edges are ready, polish an internal surface of shell using abrasive paper, and quickly treat coating polishing buff. Set plastics and rims, and you can play!

Elicit A Good Sound, Or Everything Depends On Your Technique

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Let’s examine an ordinary situation. So, you spent two-month salary to acquire an excellent drum kit of top series. Firstly feeling, that you are professional drummer and that you have a professional instrument, you anticipate magic sounding.

But during rehearsals with group you can feel that drums inexplicably do not sound predictably. They sound as your previous kit, maybe louder and clearer, but it is not magical sound. What’s wrong?

Vulnerable spot of many drummers especially beginners is an inability to elicit rich and accurate tone from drums with any level of loudness. This is an art, and it depends on technique more than on the cost of drums. Of course, tuning, type of wood, quality of construction and a choice of plastics are important. But drums with the price list from Lexus will not sound cool, if you drum as a furious gorilla.

The sound of every instrument in many aspects depends on musician’s control, and a sound of drums, especially acoustic ones, depends on drummer. Tone, height of a sound and a timbre are in his hands.

There are essential differences between cheap and quality drums, which influence a sound, but this is not the reason to think that the inexpensive tuned instrument will not give you good sound, if you have good technique. Many great drummers created unique sounds on kits, which are instruments of student’s level according to today’s standards.

Technique is versatile and all rules and methods entered into this concept are interconnected. From the technical point of view to achieve high control and a constancy of blows is the most important thing. Beside the physical abilities, which need development and permanent job, other aspects of technique such as hearing, musicality and creativity, also deserve attention.

Our goal is a pure and steady sound of blows. Hard grip suppresses a sound, when too weakened grip does not give power to natural sounding of shell. Because of bad readiness of one hand, sounds are erratic, and such inexactitudes and discords make bad sound.

Do exercises, which can improve force, accuracy, sensitivity of your weak hand. You should become proficient in “sticking” (stick technique).

Qualitative sticking allows to play equally well with different dynamics, it is an important for drummer to show this ability during varying of musical moments.

Developing good “stick control”, you should remember, that you need strong blow in a correct point. You need constancy and biting force at different levels of loudness.

Technique “heel-down” gives free and fast bounce, which allows varying dynamics. Technique “heel-up” is used everywhere. It gives a strong blow, which is important when you need a low sounding. “Heel-down” is used basically in a jazz, and gives more sustain and tone.

Sound-absorbing Platform For A Drum Kit

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

In this article we will give you information about the main principles of making a sound-absorbing platform for your drum kit and you will do it with us doing everything step-by-step. The platform should be made of plywood a 0.5 inches thick and tennis balls. You need such tools as a saw, an electric portable drill, a perforator and a nozzle in the form of a hole saw with the diameter of 1.75 inches.

You should think about two additional moments.

1. Decide on how big pieces of plywood you should take, because you and all your drums should be placed conveniently on this platform.

2. Some parts of a platform will withstand a greater load, for example, those parts, where a heavier drummer will sit. In such places it is possible to add additional tennis balls, because the platform should withstand a greater load. These balls can always be added later.

Cross both sheets of plywood in one of the corners. Mark it, because you should combine both sheets correctly later. Mark the top sheet of plywood in those places, where you want to fasten tennis balls. Balls fastened on a distance of approximately 12-16 inches from each other, provide sufficient support.

Grip in a vice or fasten by screws both sheets of plywood together. In the marked places drill fixing holes with the diameter of 0.25 inches, where the balls will be placed. Using a ring saw with diameter 1 ¾ inches make sawcuts in places of the fixing holes. Here we can give you some advices: do sawcuts in each sheet of plywood separately. Making sawcuts raise a ring saw for a short time to clear its teeth. Make cleaning every 10-15 seconds of work. Thanks to this, you will do everything faster.

After every sawcut remove cut section of plywood from a nozzle of a ring saw. Do all holes in both sheets of plywood. Place tennis balls on the lower sheet of plywood. Place the top sheet of plywood on tennis balls.

It is possible to place additional third sheet of plywood on top, if you want to get a plane surface for walking. Two top sheets can be fastened together by short wood screws and some glue.

Lower sheet and top sheet of plywood are possible to be coupled by short pieces of a nylon cable, passing it through the holes, which you had made in both sheets at the corners.

Small pieces of veneer a ½ inches thick and 4 tennis balls easily endure a weight of the adult person in standing position. And, of course, this is very useful thing. So, you can spread information about this construction and detailed account about its creating between your friends drummers. It is simple to make, easy operating and serves well.

What Is Trigger And How It Works?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

All drums, both acoustic and electronic use some mechanical impulse for its transformation to a sound. This impulse gives stick blow on a special surface. In acoustic drums this surface is a plastic which vibrates after blow and creates sound waves, which then grow louder with the help of the resonator. In electronic drums such impulse will be transformed to an electric signal by special sensor – trigger. What is a trigger?

Drum trigger plays the main role in the work of electronic drums system. Electronic kit is the system including playing surface (pads and cymbals), triggers, leads, drum module and a sound source.

The trigger is usual piezoelectric detector (but there are also exceptions to the rules). It is fastened to a drum rim. Roughly speaking, at the moment of blow, the plate of piezoelectric detector bends, and as a result it gives electric discharge, as in piezo-lighters. The louder is the blow, the stronger is electric discharge.

Drum trigger converts energy created during the blow in electric impulses. Then impulses are transferred in the module (a system brain) by cables. The trigger can also be named a sensor or a converter.

There are special devices, to which these triggers are connected: there are midi-controllers which on the basis of this signal generate a certain midi-command, the note with a given loudness. The louder is the blow, the louder is the note. One certain note and a timbre, sometimes some timbres, depending on quantity of sampler levels correspond to every trigger.

There are triggers with two and three piezoelectric detectors inside, for example, for a small drum or cymbal imitation, when one piezo-element reacts to blow in plastic, and another one – to blow in a rim. And midi-controller gives on an exit already two midi-commands from one drum. In the majority of modern drum modules midi-controller is combined with an integrated sampler. They can give not only midi-commands, but also ready drum sounds, and it can also have integrated processor of effects and a sequencer.
So, you can take a trigger, fasten it to a stool, strike it with a stick and, as a result, get a sound of a small drum!

The most common type of drum triggers is piezo. In non-assembled condition, there are two wires – positive and negative. Actually, piezo can make a sound in form of a buzz, and it transfers not only an impulse from a blow, but even height of drum sounding.

The trigger registers the fact of a blow and also its intensity, and sound module synthesizes necessary electric oscillations.

There is a stereotype that, if you want to play electronic drums, you should use only standard electronic kit. But you should know that piezo can be embedded even in an acoustic set, yes! So, you do not have any limitations.

What Is Nashville Numbered System?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

This article is a call to all professional drummers. Have you ever had such situation: you need to learn a ton of songs, but there is no time for it? Of course, you have, and this article is for you. It is about Nashville numbered system.

The Nashville numbered system is fast, accurate and musical method of making scores. If you want to record in studio, you should understand what this is.

Numbered scores totally displace those “cribs”, which most of us use during playing an unfamiliar material. The biggest shortcoming of such notes is a perspicuity only for you. Even if you can explain it other drummer, your notes cannot be a “guideline” for the other members of the group. But if you can read and note numbered scores, you will see that instead of beating times, you actually start listening to other musicians.

The first, what you should know about numbered scores is that each number corresponds to a certain level of scale. Instead of “C- D- E- F- G- A- B-C” we use numbers: “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1″. But why should we use numbers when it is possible to use letters, which stand for notes? You know, when you note scores using letter C, for example, it is always “C”. So, if you noted score in a key of C major, and then singer will want to lift a key to F major, you will note a score from the start. If you use numbers C=1, D=2 etc. and if a key is too low and you can change a key of C to F, and then it will be F=1, G=2 etc. In other words, when you note numbered score, it is possible to play it in any key.

Now let’s examine the structure of numbered scores. When you see separate number, it means that this chord is played during one time. All chords are major “by default”, if there are no other marks. Minor chords are marked by the sign “-”, going after number, for example: 2-

Besides, you can easily mark alteration (sharps or flats). The sign “#” raises note a semitone, the sign “b” lowers it a semitone.

If two or more numbers are underlined, it means that they are played during one time. It is the so-called split bar. For example: 2 5

Numbered scores are noted by phrases, and phrases are grouped in blocks. These blocks are marked by “V” if this is a verse or by “CH”, if this is a chorus.

For more convenient perception song blocks are divided by line. To the right of every block note there are drum patterns. It is a very convenient way to remember scores during “live” playing or playing in a studio. Always have a pencil for personal marks. During studio sessions rhythms for a bass drum often vary depending on preferences of a producer.

Though in numbered scores many traditional musical symbols are used, there are also unique symbols, which characterize only this system. One of such signs is a rhombus, which is drawn round a number, when it is necessary to play the whole note. You usually play it, doing unison blow on a bass drum and crash during the first beat of a bar.

Another often used symbol is a “^” (”circumflex “). When this sign is over a number, it means that it is necessary to play short note. Symbols radically change the character of phrase’s sounding.

Drums are known human life from ancient times. Thus Small wonder that many people want to play drums. If you still can not play drums then check out this site – it is the very place online which offer you rudiments and where you can obtain the materials. How To Learn Behavior On Stage

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Attack a problem of behavior on the stage. We hope that our advices and experience will help you.

Remember that sighted listeners require spectacular concert performance. They want musical show. Do not disappoint them!

For openers, it is necessary to give your performance a good clear-out. You should watch the video of it without fear. Self-hate broke many destinies of musicians. Self-rejection on the one hand is embodied in a cheap coquetry and on the other hand – in attempt to hide behind music.

1. The cheap coquetry (phoniness) always looks poorly, showing impropriety trying to hide inability to show. Real musician is a plastique entered into a sound! This is a multicoloured emotional experience and good mood. It is possible to assert that 80 % of musicians have rather scant notions about musical palette of influencing a person.

Learn wealth of imagination from small children. Try to get the best of them, then you are an actor. Children perfectly feel falseness and quickly slacken off after unskillful attempts of adult fools to represent game. They appreciate sincerity and feel it.

2. Attempts to hide behind music or behind an instrument have, as a rule, such argument: «I don’t want any clownery! I only want to play! » But have you ever seen a musician, who only “plays”? Are you sure, that Chopin, for example, «only played»? Of course, no.

Defenders of the second shortcoming (false modesty) often say: «Hands are busy with playing, what can I do?». For them we have a simple question: « is your heart busy?» Usually listeners close their eyes, because they do not want to see a defective person, who only «produces sounds».

Try to explain before playing, what you want to give them, what moods, what paints and how you are going to do this. Remember, that you should speak not about you, but about music. This is very important!

Principle of good musician is: firstly, disarm (uncover your problems), then arm (learn new techniques). Reveal your shortcomings! Because you will achieve nothing without working to improve yourself.

Old skilled comic actors advise not to hide shortcomings! There’ll always be somebody who sees it. Don’t hide defect, which you grossly exaggerated. Hiding it, you on the contrary emphasize it.

There is a list of bad habits, which public do not want to see on a stage most of all: situation, when musician can’t move naturally; forced strained smile; fear of public; pretentious motions of the body, rolling up eyes; falseness and insincerity; showing off, gawking; indifference and lack of self-confidence; stamping foot; nervous tapping with fingers on a microphone; smoking or chewing the chewing gum; boring on a scene; dilettantish jokes; baring without appropriate mood; pretentious acting.
Joy go with you, dear colleagues!

Ten Steps To The Best Technique

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

There are twelve ways to make your drumming more productive and pleasant. After all we get more pleasure, when we see our progress.

1. Hands training. This is a problem number one for all the students, beginners and advanced ones. It is not important what grip of sticks you use – traditional, or symmetric – always watch that your hands are in correct position. Your development will be limited, if you do not play in correct position, your playing will be purer and better.

2. Alternate blows. Keep in your head the phrase, “one stick up, other stick down” and adhere to this rule. You should be always ready to do a blow, both from high, and from low position. Concentration on serial blows will make your technique more fluent.

3. The height of stick rising indicates the height of stick bounce from playing surface. Both sticks after a blow always should come back to the same height. The majority of drummers do not use both hands equally well, and they lift a stick with the strong hand higher, than with the weak hand. It means that one stick passes longer way and should move faster, when the other one has weaker bounce.

Unequal height of stick rising, together with wrong training and wrong serial blows are the reason of bad drumming.

4. Play “of” a drum. Many drummers play “in” a drum instead of playing “of” it. After blow, try to tear a stick from plastic immediately. Use natural bounce of sticks.

5. Learn and practice rudiments. Rudiments are an alphabet on basis of which a complete dictionary of drummer is made, and knowing of drum script is indisputable plus for you. If you learn at least one rudiment in a week time, during half a year you’ll know all the twenty six traditional rudiments.

6. Work with metronome. Contrary to many opinions, playing with metronome will not make your playing stiff. This will improve your time sense and metre sense, and these factors are critical for successful drummer. Use different speeds, including the slowest.

7. Training should become your habit. All of us suffer from shortage of time. But even in such days you should do five – ten minute warm-ups.

8. Diversify your trainings. It especially helps, when time on training is limited. Sometimes it is better to look at a general regime of week trainings instead of one day trainings list. Spend one day on hands training, other day devote to independence, the following to reading music and assign a day for studying rudiments. Do not forget to drum something before training, it helps to concentrate.

9. Pay attention to sticks. You should use identical sticks, both for performance, and for training. At the same time it can be useful for muscles to play sticks lighter or heavier few times a week. This can increase force and elasticity.

10. Aim at perfection. There is no sense to waste time on trainings if you do not aim at being perfect. Be an exacting critic to yourself and be cautious estimating your growth.

Drums are known human history from ancient times. Thus No wonder that many guys want to play drums. If you still have no skills to play drums then go to this site – it is the right place online which offer you rudiments and where you can obtain the materials. How Long Does A Drummer Needs To Train?

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

There is a known saying concerning importance of training “If I had not played for one day, I would have known it. If I had not played for two days, my wife would have known it. If I had not played for three days, it would have been noticed by my listeners”.

Time that we spare on technique work is very important for perfection and maintenance of our performing level. But, unfortunately, for many reasons time spent on playing, is usually used not in the best way. For example, many drummers do not work on new ideas and do not play new exercises. Instead they play those parts, which they already know. It can be good for perfecting existing technique, but does not give any progress. Also the question about the quality opposed to quantity is very topical. I think that correctly concentrated drummer during half an hour can achieve more, than a drummer, who plays during two hours without mood.

The essence of training should be in aspiration for faultlessness and development preserving musicality. Let’s examine each of these elements.

Faultlessness. Every method of playing should be brought to perfection as fast as it is possible. You should know everything about position of hands, serial blows, height of raising the sticks, movement of a brush and grip of sticks. Incorrect training of these things will lead to development of wrong technique.

Development. Every training should be a challenge to play something never played earlier. It can be a new rudiment, a fragment of musical composition or exercise. It also can be a new tempo for an old exercise, it must not be faster, it must be simply different. If you hold this in a head, the old collection of exercises can become a magnificent resource for a capture of new achievements.

Musicality. purpose of every musical instrument is playing music. That’s why, music should be in the foreground during trainings. Even new rudiment or exercise should be made with regard to music.

Duration of trainings. The quantity of time, which a drummer needs for training varies from person to person. Beginners can play from half an hour to one hour per day, increasing this time till two hours after the first year of training. Students who are going to study, or already study in musical college, should play from two to four hours per day. Young men who decided to devote their lives to playing drums should train from eight hours per day.

Then with increasing of the number of constant performances, time of trainings will decrease according to necessity for concrete person and according to their schedule. But some routine exercises should be done during all professional work.

Remember also, that long time spent on drumming can cause carpal tunnel syndrome and problems in lumbosacral part of a back. To prevent these problems, doctors recommend having a rest during five minutes after every half an hour of training.

For Drummers: Some Variants Of Grips

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

There are sets of variants of sticks gripping. Each grip has its advantages depending on style of music, instrument and physiology of concrete drummer. Grip during playing of roll of a drum can differ from a grip during playing of second notes. Many professional drummers use different types of grips during one song.

Strictly speaking, there are two kinds of grips:

1) Traditional (conventional, orthodox, rudimental grip). Left hand grips a stick differently, than the right one (left-handers do on the contrary).

2) Symmetric (matched, parallel grip). Left and right hand hold a stick equally.

Symmetric grip is very widespread. That’s why let’s analyse symmetric grip and its variants: German (palm down), French (a thumb is above, a palm is almost perpendicular to floor) and American (middle position).

A qualified teacher begins the first lesson from recommendations about finding a point of stick balance. A place of a grip when stick has the freest bounce (usually there are approximately 12 centimeters from the butt of a stick).

In the found point of balance grip a stick between the ball of the thumb and second phalange of forefinger (closer to a bend in the direction of nail). This “clamp” of fingers is also called fulcrum. It should create conditions for free rotation of a stick on the point of balance on a phalanx of forefinger. Everyone finds the degree of a grip of a stick for itself during practice. The main condition is avoiding muscle tension, even if sticks slip out of your hands.

Bend a forefinger tip and slightly grip a stick by other fingers. This hook of a forefinger is used for helping a stick, if it has a weak bounce. Don’t grip a stick tight by other fingers.

Also turn your attention to watching an interval between the thumb and the index finger. It is one of indicators of your hands freedom.

It is possible to achieve correct position of hands, if you do easy exercises. Firstly, you should stand without sticks and to relax your shoulders. Raise an arm to almost parallel position against the floor. Undistracted your attention on hands, hands should be a continuation of forearms, palms downwards. Naturally raised hands in one plane with a forearm, and part elbows.

Palms down are the so-called German grip, the most widespread variant among drummers playing a small drum in symphonic orchestras. Thanking to freedom in movement of a hand (upwards-downwards) it is good for playing rudiments in different dynamics. American grip characterized by hands, which should be tucked by 30-40 degrees. Such variant is more convenient for moving hands between drums of kit and gives more freedom, giving a power of German capture.

For French grip the thumb should be above, palms must be turned to each other, hands are almost perpendicular to a floor. It is convenient for playing cymbals, when bounce is worse in comparison with the bounce from drum plastic. Billy Cobham and Simon Phillips play using French grip.

Secrets Of Traditional Grip

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Traditional grip throws back military draft tradition. If you play drum, which is hanging on your shoulder, the drum will move down, saying more precisely, on the right party and left hand will strike precisely to a rim. Traditional grip allows rising of a stick over a drum rim, keeping an angle between a stick and a drum surface, at the same time, (that is why many drummers play using traditional grip inclining a small drum from themselves).

The leading hand (right-handed person uses the right hand) holds a stick like by symmetric grip. Bend relaxed weak hand in an elbow and open it like if you are holding a tennis ball. Put a stick on a connective-tissue between thumb and index finger forming the fulcrum. It will be a point of support as a fulcrum in symmetric grip around which stick rotates.

Try to feel traditional grip and to strengthen feeling of the fulcrum, doing the following exercise: stick in the fulcrum, hand looks sideways. Strike relaxed blows rotating a hand round an axis of forearm.

For ending of a grip put the top joint of a forefinger on the surface a stick. Unbent, as it is possible in its relaxed position, long finger lies on a surface of a stick. The phalanx of the fourth finger serves as a support for a stick, the little finger is bend. Palm looks sideways, it is important not to open it upwards. Hand is on one line with a forearm, without sharp turns.

In every grip except American one, heads of sticks are over the drum centre, an angle between sticks is approximately 90 degrees. In American grip an angle is less than 90 degrees.

Use these recommendations as a guideline, but also do not neglect advices of knowing teachers. There are many types of grips, in this article we gave you information about the most widespread. Its effectiveness, if you follow some rules, is checked up by many drummers. These variants of grips allow to play relaxed hands in position, which is natural for them and to increase technique.

What variant of different grips to choose is a foundation stone in discussions between drummers, and the main rule is absence of dogmas. It is more important to understand “physics of process”: how to make a blow, how the stick jumps and how to control this. A variety of grips is an attempt to control natural powers affecting sticks during playing as much conveniently as possible. In other words, you should adjust natural movement of a stick to your hands and add ergonomic muscular work. The chief task for musician is free sounding of an instrument, and what fingers will grip a stick is probably not so important.

Let’s Look In The Shell Of Our Drum!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

As we remember from geometry, drum is simply a hollow closed cylinder. However, this is something much bigger. Its characteristics are defined by the shell and plastics, materials and construction, which influence the sounding and rendering.

Especial secret shells of drums have, and the type of wood, of which they are made, their sizes and design are important factors influencing the sounding of the drum. And taking into consideration numerous series of drum kits, which are made by different companies on almost all continents, to say nothing of existing markets of vintage (i.e. in “classical” style) and made to order production, it is not so simple to understand something in this subject.

That’s why let’s remove plastic and look into these cylinders which inspire such love in us.

Except metal small drums and drums with acrylic shells, the majority of these instruments are made of wood. Maple, birch, oak, linden, ash-tree, Indian redwood, there are some types of wood, which is used today by producers.

It is necessary to say that drums are made of firm types of wood, i.e. deciduous, instead of soft coniferous woods. Those from the firm types of wood, which are used for making drums, usually have physical characteristics beginning with averages and finishing firm.

Producers use different types of wood for drums making because of different reasons, both economic, and practical ones. Firstly, every concrete type of used wood should be supplied in abundance and always be of high quality. Abundance is important for making such quantity of drums, which producer needs. A constancy of quality, when a wood structure is dense and straight is an indispensable condition, because of which every producer can be absolutely assured in good result.

Secondly, wood should be suitable for work. Some woods are simply too firm for shell making: it is hard to make a veneer of them and to thread an edge. For these and similar reasons such materials as black rosewood or white spruce, which are perfect for guitars making, are impractical for drum shells. On the other hand, using, for example, maple wood, you can thread an edge which will provide a fine pure surface. Maple’s structure is good both on edges, and on lateral surfaces.

Thirdly, sheets of veneer chosen for an external surface of shell should be visually attractive.

There are also other things, which you should take into account choosing wood for shell. The first that comes to mind is realization of what you want. If you are trying to achieve longer sustain choose a drum made of maple. If you need a drum with sharper sounding which is good for record, use birch wood. Maple wood has long vibration, and birch wood vibrates very quickly and shortly.

Information For Drummers About Brushes

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

There are many types of brushes: telescopic and non telescopic, with metal or plastic bristles, with wooden handles, with hollow aluminium handles, with handles covered with rubber, with butts in the form of a ring, in the form of a sphere etc. Now there are brushes for all styles of playing.

Brushes give texture and timbre which cannot be received using sticks only. For example, gentle rustling sounds on coated membranes and dainty “ringing” on cymbals become possible only with metal or nylon brushes. Such masters as Ed Thigpen and Clayton Cameron can force brushes to sing. Every drummer should try playing brushes even simply for kicks or self-expression!

Telescopic models allow putting away bristles of brushes in their body for their protection against damages. Besides, such moving-out mechanism allows to regulate the width of this “fan-shaped tail” in the way a drummer needs.

Handles and bristles of non telescopic models are also very different, the name (non telescopic) means that they do not put forward and do not fold up. You should store such brushes with extra care, if you do not want to damage bristles. Some non sliding models can be bought with tubes, which must protect bristles against damages.

Handles can be made of wood, plastic or aluminium, covered or not covered with rubber. Wood, plastic and aluminium are usually used for making non telescopic brushes, while telescopic ones are often made of aluminium covered with rubber.

Bristles of brushes can be wire, nylon and vinyl. The material of bristles essentially influences the sound and the sensation of brushes. Wire bristles give a silky sound with crackling sensation. Since they are very thin, the number of wire bristles in one brush is more than the number of plastic bristles in a similar brush, which gives a full silky textural timbre, which many drummers like and use in their performances.

Nylon bristles are thicker, than wire, and for making one brush not so many nylon bristles are needed. Such bristles give not so dense, but gloomier texture of sound, than the wire bristles do. Nylon bristles are lighter and coarser, and also represent good alternative to classical wire brushes.

Vinyl bristles are the thickest and give the gloomiest timbre of sounding from all types of bristles. They are also coarser, similar to bundles, so drummers use them usually playing popular music in style un-plugged.

Control over the width of “fan-shaped tail” of bristles allows influencing on the sound of brushes: a wider fan gives denser, wide sound, while a narrow fan gives more focused and sharp sound.

Generally speaking, it is quite good to have both wire, and plastic brushes to be ready for any musical situation. Choose brushes depending on a sound which you wish to obtain.

What Sticks It Is Better To Chose

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

When you come to the musical shop, you will see that there is a great variety of them. So what sticks to choose?

Firstly, buy more expensive sticks, because the quality of a product influences the sound which you will create, and durability of sticks.

Playing different styles with different presentation it is necessary to use different sticks. Thanks to different weight and length of a stick, structure of the sound will vary.

It is usually hard for beginners to use different sticks, because they strongly get accustomed to those sticks with which you play for the first time.

There is a widespread advice: train using heavy sticks, and play using easier pair, don’t follow it! This can lead to irreversible consequences. You can damage hands, overtaxing them; this can also lead to impossibility of playing drums.

Your stick is a hands continuation, and the use of sticks should not complicate or facilitate your efforts. That’s why choosing your first sticks it is necessary to remember that they must lay down well in a hand and be convenient in their weight, diameter and length.

You can choose wooden sticks or sticks made of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber is an extremely strong material standing huge loads and pressure, and having one of the highest wear resistance indexes among all known materials. This material is favorable. Usually during playing you dent and chap wooden sticks and long before breaking, they gradually lose their properties. Sticks of a carbon fiber are not erased, do not burst, and do not break up so quickly as usual wooden sticks, serving 5 times longer, and not losing properties till their last day.

So, how to hold sticks? Take a stick in hands and divide it mentally into three parts. Put a ball of the thumb on a border between second and third part, beginning from a stick head.

Then press a stick by forefinger to hold a stick by bend between first and second phalanxes. Such position of fingers is called the “basic lock”.

Thumb should not be pressed to forefinger, there should be some space between them, and other fingers simply embrace the stick. Leave an end of a stick open approximately on one and a half or two centimeters.

If you want to feel your sticks in future, you should do this exercise 20-30 times per day by each hand. When a stick has already been fixed in a «basic lock», and all fingers are on their place, rock a brush slightly upwards and downwards, trying to hold your stick in «basic lock» keep an eye on your fingers. They should not move down from that place where you initially hold a stick by the thumb and the index finger.

Anatomy Of Sticks And How To Choose Good Pair Of Sticks

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

The butt of a stick (its thick end) is a counterbalance of a stick. If it is necessary that you can use it for playing, simply turning a stick to receive additional power and loudness.

Besides, some producers do special butts, which can give you different effects.

Shaft is a basic part of a stick. It is not only a place of holding, but it is also used for blowing a rim of a small drum during playing using a method side stick. Some producers sell a tape, sticks with fillets, knurls and sticks of the special form in a place of holding to prevent a slip.

Johnny Rabb’s stick has a ridge surface to make a cracking sound (on a drum rim), this is a fine possibility for playing in Jungle style. Look, as Johnny Rabb plays, he is the best.

The shoulder is a zone of a stick below a head by which the majority of drummers strike crashes, play rim shot, and also intimate backbeats. Playing high-hat by head and by shoulder in turn easily gives a popular sound “chit-chat”.

Narrowing is a form of a shoulder. Length and thickness of narrowing part influences the flexibility and stick sounding. Sticks with shorter and thick narrowing part are felt as harder, they are more durable and give stronger sound, than sticks with longer and thinner narrowing part, which are more fragile and flexible, but give more gentle sound.

There are also many different types of stick heads.

Choosing sticks always check, whether they are straight, and if the height of tone and weight of sticks in a pair are identical.

Sticks should be straight as an arrow. Checking this, roll sticks along a smooth plane surface, they should not wobble. Throw off the crooked sticks and do the next test.

Even having an ideal technique, you can sound, as a beginner if sticks are not fitted by height of tone. Take sticks and make blows as equally as it is possible (you should hear the difference in sticks, instead of difference in your technique). When you find sticks with identical height of tone, do the following test.

If you want really good exactness, take scales (by the way, there are shops of drum kits, where there are scales specially for weighing the sticks); if this is impossible pin your faith on your own sensations and choose a pair of sticks as much close in weight as possible. Heavier sticks give more powerful tone.

If you don’t know, how to play tips, before choosing read this. You can essentially change a timbre of blows, changing an angle of blow. For example, playing by “nose” of a head, you will receive a brighter tone. Playing by middle of a head, you will receive a flatter sound.

Qualitative Characteristics Of Sticks

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Though the shape of sticks heads is infinitely various, they can be divided into four base categories:
1) Round heads. There are small and big round heads.
Small round heads give the bright focused tone and are especially good for cymbals. Big round heads give more of stick’s body tone, than small sticks.
2) Dolioform heads.
Heads in the form of a keg have bigger area of contact, than round-headed, and give average tone of a stick body and wider focus.
3) Directed, or triangular heads.
These heads give focused average tone.
4) Heads in the form of an olive, or tears.
Heads in the form of an olive, or tears, give full low tone. These heads extend energy to wider area; additionally they have a big durability, which is good for those drummers, who play a lot.

There are also nylon tips for sticks heads.

Heads of firm woods give a brighter tone, than the stick heads made of soft wood. However, sooner or later wooden head will start to become worse: soft and chapped, and the sound will become blurred, gloomy and not focused. To provide a good sound throughout all service life of a stick, Joe Calato from Regal Tip Company proposed to use sticks with nylon tips. Basic forms of such tips influence the sound as well as the wooden ones, but because of nylon’s hardness they give a brighter tone, a bigger attack and distribution. The great advantage of nylon is its durability: it will not crack as a wood of course.

If you bought a timbale, there are special sticks for it. Sticks for timbale have two blunt ends and they are usually thinner and easier, than drum-type sticks. Such form gives bright rim shot and full tone during playing cascara rhythms.

Remember, for what purpose you are choosing sticks and choose the most comfortable to you. The choice of material, thickness, and head form are questions of taste. It should be convenient for you to hold sticks, and they should give exactly the sound which you want. For example, 7A sticks are fine choice for rehearsal in apartment, but they are the most inconvenient type of sticks for a military band.

Choose sticks which you can hold and control without any problems and which correspond to your style of playing. The more is the diameter, the more is the distribution and force.

Long sticks have some advantages, there are bigger lever and access, but it is more difficult to control them. If you want to add force with the same diameter, try longer sticks.

Weight influences a tone, power and your ability to control a stick. In general, the heavier are the sticks the more substantial are the tone and loudness. The lighter are the sticks, the thinner is the tone.

Heavy sticks “cover” the majority of mistakes of hand training, that’s why it is easier to use them for beginners.

How To Protect Drummer’s Ears?

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Every drummer, who wants to devote their life to musical career, should read and take into consideration this information. These advices will save your musical life.

If you are an old-time drummer, of course, you have problems with ears. If you are dull of hearing, know that hearing impairment will develop.

If you treat your ears badly today, this will tell on you greatly in future, and if you overstrain your ear by loud noise, gradual damage will become nonreversible.

Trauma of hearing would be for keeps. There is no cure for this disease. So take it seriously. If you have ringing in ears, its periodical disappearing can abuse you. This gives as false thought that ringing will pass and ear “will heal” as a wound on a skin. It is not the case. If you have ringing, you are in danger and should urgently take measures for the saving of life of your hearing because next time ringing can become permanent!

Trauma of hearing can be slow to emerge. Sometimes there is pain, and we try to go to a more silent place, but often there is no pain. In any case, damage of hearing is always a dangerous thing.

Sometimes you can meet a man, who thinks that nothing is going to knock him. But then you meet the same person in twenty years, and he says to you: “Sorry? What? Can you speak louder?”

Headphones are also harmful. Most of decibels are in a spectrum which ears are incapable of appreciating.

There is a solving of this problem for drummers. It is obvious: buy ear plugs. Of course, they are uncomfortable and will disturb you. Plugs also destroy frequencies, and reduce ability to hear volume of sound and to supervise dynamics. They soil themselves and it is easy to lose them, that is why you should always have a pair in different places. But they will protect you. Use them during rehearsals and avoid loud night clubs. Shut off loud music in your car. If there is a possibility, try to play electronic drums more often, instead of acoustic.

You can use foam rubber plugs, they are cheap and comfortable, but they deform a sound and it seems that cymbals sound awfully. That’s why it is better to buy more expensive plugs, which lower decibels across a wide band, lowering loudness, but leaving exactness of sounding.

There are also such headphones, which cover ears completely, they are very effective, but they can disturb you during playing and they are not aesthetically acceptable.

Do some small research before buying, and avoid the plugs made for swimming. Swimmers use them to protect ears from water, instead of protecting from sound. Consult other drummers or sellers in musical shops.

Eight Recommendations For Really Cool Drummers

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Drummers can be divided into four different categories according to their skills. Representatives of the lowest category are the drummers, who have no style and technique and know only one level of dynamics, this is a loud level! Their efforts lead to unfortunate results: all the drummers fall into disrepute and, unfortunately, provide a long life to jokes like “there are five musicians and a drummer in our group”.

Representatives of the next level are undistinguished people. They play passably, but they are no bargain.

Representatives of the third level are competent musicians. They perfectly play in group, but they haven’t got any magic, and there is no sensation that you see (and hear) a really cool drummer. But there are also drummers, who can make you feel stunned, they are, for example, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Joe Morello and Steve Gadd. They are from category of masters. They are up to the knocker.

We know eight basic elements, which you need to become a master.

First of all, this is an accurate tempo. Try to play evenly, keep up your tempo. You can develop this aptitude, using a metronome during every training on a pad.

Musicality is something that someone has by nature, and others learn it very long. We’ll give you the key to musicality: listen to as much music as possible, and playing together with other musicians, listen to each of them and try to enrich general sounding of an orchestra, but never suppress it.

Authenticity. Learn to play the majority of musical styles, and play each style in your own way. Such ability can be developed by listening to the best representatives of groups in various musical genres.

Never overdo. If you can play all notes, this is good, but it is even better to learn to make pauses. Develop virtuosity, but also try, when it is necessary, to pass into the background and allow other members of group to get across.

Good dynamics. Many drummers tend to “rock” on the big levels of loudness, but to “die” in quiet places. Constantly work on yourself to sound cool in every dynamic level from ultra-silent to mega-loud.

Strong breaks. Provide so fast playing of beaks as it is possible with the best coordination. You should be able to play everything that comes to your mind. If in the middle of a song you have an excellent idea, but you will not realize it properly, this excellent idea will spoil the whole drive. Best drummers can play everything that strikes them, without an effort.

There is also some nuances, which do not concern directly your playing on a scene, but they are directly connected with the number of possibilities to appear on it! Any front-men will not be pleasant to entertain public during hours, while drummer is finishing his preparations. Try to arrive on a concert with a float: you should have time to install drums and at least 20 minutes to relax before the show.

Eighth and the last basic element of a cool drummer skill is optimism. Optimists radiate some catching energy, which forces everyone to feel wonderful and to play excellently. Louie Bellson has this ability.

Follow these recommendations and good luck!

Do You Know The History Of Cymbals?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Cymbals exist from time immemorial. Ancient Egyptian cymbals were very similar to modern: we know this, because they were found in the sarcophagus of the mummy of Ankhapa, deific musician (they are in British museum in London). Assyrians used both flat and cup-shaped cymbals. Ancient Greek cymbals were belled or caliciform and were often depicted in hands of uncountable fauns and satyrs on vases. The word comes from Latin word “cymbalum” which in its turn comes from the Greek word kumbalom, which meant a small bowl or a plateau.

Into eastern civilization cymbals, probably, came from ancient Chinese bells, which were named zhong. They were tonal and could make two tones (apparently, because of ellipse-like body form). No less ancient Chinese cymbals are cymbals of flat type – chung and jing. Some historians assert that such cymbals were made in China more than two thousand years ago, while Israel cymbals were dated back to the 1100 BC, and Egyptian were dated only to the 800 BC.

Ancient tradition of cymbals producing is maintained by masters of Turkey and China to this day. In Europe cymbals started to appear on a scene only in the 13th century, but they were supplied earlier. In orchestra cymbal began to be used only in the 17th century, but they did not become permanent instrument. In the 18th century cymbals were widely used in military orchestras in Turkey, from which they came to Europe again and firmly took their place in European orchestra.

In the Middle Ages the word “cymbal” was also used for denomination of glockenspiel, and later for naming of dulcimer. It must be because the sound of stroke by hammers to a string reminded a sound of a handbell. On the occasion of such keyboard instrument as clavichord and spinet, for denomination of such instruments in Romanic languages a new word “clavicymbal” was used.

Modern percussion instrument “cymbal” is more or less flat metal plate, usually it has a round form and it is made of a special alloy. The majority of modern cymbals are noise instruments.

There are, however, tonal cymbals; it means that they produce certain note. There are small cymbals in the form of a bowl. There are also kits of tonal cymbals, which are called crotales, from Latin word “crotalum”. There are small flat cymbals in diameter nearly 10 cm with a nipple in the centre. Generally speaking, such instruments resemble modern cymbals remotely because they sound only as small tonal hand bells. Nevertheless, producers make them of such alloys, as they use for real cymbals.

Different orchestras such as symphonic or military, rock and pop bands use cymbals. Cymbals made for various types of music essentially differ from each other.

Drums For Children: What To Choose

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

If you play drums, and you have a growing up child, who wishes to follow in your footsteps, buy him electronic drums.

Electronic drum kit is a very convenient instrument for playing at home, it does not disturb neighbours, does not trouble parents, it is convenient to study parts using it. However, it is better to train a blow on a surface, which has a natural sound (for example, firm rubber pad or a real drum) because sound nature needs to be understood, and when you play electronic drums, you will have the deceptive impression of understanding of it. After such playing it is usually necessary to be retrained. If an electronic drum kit consists of drums and cymbals with a rubber surface, it is possible to train blow playing on it, but you must mute beforehand, listening only to natural sounding of elastic surfaces. Then your child will need a possibility to play a real drum kit at least twice a week during two or three hours, because he must feel and remember a sound of real drums to prevent slackening of interest.

Do not explain anything to your child, when he tries to play drums for the first time. Give him a chance to play real drums. Let him sit down comfortably, take sticks as he wants to do this and beat on drums and cymbals whatever comes to his mind. Hearing chaotic sounds (noise and roar), he will want to organize them in a rhythm. Only then it is necessary to help him, give your child a hint, explaining what drums and cymbals he should drum and how. But usually every child intuitively feels what drums and cymbals should be used during playing. Give him as much time for playing, as he wants. When he is tired with playing, his attention needs to be drawn on how he creates a sound, and what properties this sound starts to possess with different force and types of strokes. How can you do this? Let your child to drum somehow an instrument, and then ask him to tell you about the sound elicited from a drum. He must tell you what sound he got (low, loud, hard, soft, elastic, or messy) and tell something about its properties. Then he will use them in different combinations of playing types, because he will remember these properties. After this it is possible to start to train seat, movements of hands and legs, using those sensations which child received from independent playing drum kit.

Children under 10 years need partial load mode. Of course, they memorize quickly all the movements and methods of playing, but they quickly get tired with such activity and can’t play for hours.

Drums accompany human life from ancient times. So it comes as no surprise that many guys want to play drums. How To Choose Good Sticks?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Every drummer has his favorite sticks. Of what material are they made? The majority of sticks are made of wood, but there are also many different types of synthetic sticks. Let’s examine what sticks are the best.

The process of sticks production begins on a lumber mill, where workers saw up logs on flitches and finish its drying in furnaces to strengthen it. Then a square section is grinded making the cylinder (dowel) and is sorted by size and grains for corresponding models. During this process those pieces of wood, which do not correspond to quality standards, are rejected.

Then workers grind dowels once again according to specification of a model and the method of production. Then there is polishing, putting nylon tips on it (if is needed), and packing under the plan. Now the majority of sticks producers select it by density and weight to assure precise coincidence of sticks in pair by tone. Woodworkers of 1940 used a wood-turning lathe.

Nowadays, hickory (North American hazel), maple and Japanese oak are most frequently used for producing sticks. From these woods the most popular one is hickory, because it absorbs vibration well and is very durable (often helves and shafts are made of hickory). Besides, for timbre and durability improvement sometimes such exotic woods as rosewood or guibourtia are used.

Maple is one of the lightest woods for sticks producing. Of course, maple is not so firm and strong wood as hickory or oak are, but it is ideal, if you want easy and fast sticks.

Hickory (this is a type of nutwood) is a wood, which is natural for sticks producing. Hickory is heavier and stronger than a maple and gives fine sensation and a timbre.

The Japanese oak is a dense and firm wood, the weight of which is usually more than that of maple or hickory, but it is very durable.

Rosewood is very dense and firm wood, of which very durable sticks are made. Some musicians also like its timbre and sensation, but its price is usually high enough. Sticks of rosewood can be made to order.

There are also many synthetic sticks. The majority of synthetic sticks producers use various materials and manufacture methods. Some patent alloy is used for its making, from this alloy sticks can be founded or turned according to specification of a producer.

Synthetic sticks are considered as more durable, than wooden ones, and also have some properties which it is impossible to give to wooden sticks. For example, there are sticks, which are composed of an aluminum body in polyurethane cover, which is possible to replace when it is worn out. There are many screw-on tips, including beetles for achievement of various sound effects. Choose synthetic sticks, if you are satisfied with their characteristics.

What To Do, If You Noticed A Crack On Your Cymbal?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

However hard you may try to protect your cymbals, there is always a probability of flawing. Unfortunately, it is not possible to stop cracking of metal completely, but there are some ways thanks to which you can essentially slow down the process of destruction.

You can stop crack, which passes along turned grooves of a cymbal, by drilling of two small apertures on each end of a crack. It is necessary to drill cautiously with your hand brace or a drill on low revolutions. Do not punch drilling places: this can lead to increasing of a crack. Also do not be mistaken in search of crack ands: take a drill of not too small diameter and drill not in that place where the crack comes to an end as you see, but a little bit more to both ways, because usually a crack has continuation, which is invisible to an eye.

You can repair a crack, which passes from an edge of a cymbal, differently depending on its weight: in heavy cymbal it is possible to drill an aperture in the end of a crack, if you have such a crack on a thin cymbal, you can get rid of it using special scissors, doing a V-shaped cut. In the corner of the cut there should not remain an end of a crack. You should sandpaper the edges manually.

Small cracks on the edge can be removed by making a scallop. It can be made by special scissors which allow to cut out internal radius, if you have heavy cymbals with such a problem, do the same but by usual fretsaw, this is long and exhausting work, but cymbal will be safer: excessive vibration can lead to the growth of a crack.

Crack of any form, which is located at an edge of a cymbal, is possible to remove considerably: in a good fitter’s shop workers will cut off an edge on circle (without using high-speed electric drill). Of course, cymbals will become smaller in diameter and will change their sound, but the crack will disappear once and for good.

In any case sharp edges should be smoothed by emery paper or needle files only manually: vibration of buffing machine can lead to destruction of a cymbal. That’s why you should not also use electric scroll saw for sawing.

Remember that you must do something immediately, as soon as you noticed a crack. After repairing do not forget to inspect regularly the damaged place for preventing growth of a crack.

However, presence of a crack means that you do something wrong, so you should find the damage reason, check up a condition of stand’s fasteners, felt washers and nylon tube, make sure that you do not tighten a cymbal too much, etc.

Solve The Problem Of Cleaning Your Cymbals

Monday, April 26th, 2010

As soon as you remove cymbals from stands, pack them in covers, because otherwise somebody can unintentionally step on them. Do not put a cymbal on the edge and do not lay it on an abrasive floor (for example, concrete floor): cymbals can get scratched, and those, which stood on the edge, can fall. If you need to lay cymbals on a firm or abrasive floor, use covers or some soft fabric.

When cymbals are not on stands, they should be packed between layers of a soft material, cotton fabric or in plastic packages, these measures will help you to avoid scratches.

Remember that cymbals costed you a pretty penny and your investments need to be protected. Always carry cymbals in individual protective covers or in one cover (it must have sections lest cymbals be shabby after transportation.

When removing and installing cymbals, use dry fabric or textile gloves, this will help you not to leave fingerprints on the instrument. Alternatively, take cymbals by edges with palms at a pinch. Wipe them with dry soft fabric, dusting them after every use before hiding them into covers. All these actions will save your time during capital cleaning of cymbals.

If you don’t use cymbals during a long period of time, wrap each cymbal in a piece of fabric to protect surfaces and edges of. And finally, cymbals need to be cleaned regularly.

When using cymbals soil them: there are fingerprints, sweat, grease, dust, scenic smoke, lubricating oil, dirt, oxides, marks after stick’s strokes, all these things do not improve either their look or a sound. Modern cymbals have a protective coat, preventing oxidation and small dirty spots, so if you wipe cymbals after each use, the moment of cleaning will not come so soon, but sooner or later cymbals should be cleaned. It is recommended that cymbals are cleaned every 4-6 weeks of using depending on how much and how often you play them.

All the leading producers of cymbals put on sale different cleaners. There is a tendency to create universal cleaners which can be used for cleaning cymbals of all marks.

Put a little cleaner on a cymbal (this can be a spray or you can spread it by a rag), leave a cymbal for some time, then clear it by a fabric from a mix of cleaner and dirt (describing circles from centre to borders), and then polish it by dry pure fabric.

All the universal cleaners leave very thin protective membrane which like a skin during some time protects a cymbal from getting dirty. This membrane collapses in 3-5 weeks after usual use of cymbals. It is recommended that the places with logos are not rubbed if you want to preserve it.

How To Protect My Cymbals?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

We noticed that the cost of cymbals approximately makes a half of all our investments into percussion instruments, and this ratio does not depend on how much you spend on it – 60$ or 6000$. Imagine! 50 % of your good money turns into fragile plates of bronze, cymbal is a very thin instrument and it is necessary to protect it. But how?

You have to remember: nothing lasts forever in this world, and any cymbal some day will crack and become worthlessness. Nevertheless, there are some rules, following which will prolong a life of your cymbals, and you will want to buy new models much earlier, than your old complete will retire. If you looked after your cymbals, this will help you to fetch more selling your old complete.

Firstly, it is necessary to choose cymbals correctly. Buying the complete of cymbals, you should remember first of all how you are going to play. The sound of cymbals is defined by an alloy, its size, form, turning, forging and covering. Producers of cymbals create models for various musical styles, and you should choose cymbals according to your music and playing manner. If you bought jazz cymbals and will try to get a rock sound, this will most likely lead to cracks. Do not buy thin cymbals if you play heavy rock. Do not play thin cymbals, using thick sticks. Do not buy expensive cymbals if you can’t control your force and technique, it will be better to train on brass cheap cymbals.

Secondly, it is necessary to play cymbals correctly. Cymbals are the instruments, which are made with special assiduity. Play with care and good technique, and your cymbals will serve you much longer, than those which are played on roughly and with bad technique. Maltreatment, neglect and wrong playing technique bring closer ageing of metal, reduce quality of a sound and eventually lead to cracks and ruptures.

Try not to beat perpendicularly to edge of a cymbal. Making such blow you “immerse” a stick in a cymbal, and you get bad sound, because such blow does not allow to a cymbal to vacillate and sound freely. Besides, little by little both a cymbal and a stick suffer. If cymbals “eat” your sticks, most likely you play incorrectly.

It is necessary to play crash using easy and fast glancing blow, a little from the side of imagined radius of a cymbal. Blow “along the straight line” (perpendicularly to edge) will lead to damage of an instrument. Stroke with a small rotation of a wrist will help to prevent cracks, and the sound will be essentially better.

Thirdly, install cymbals correctly on stands. The most important principle is avoiding contact of cymbals and metal. It is necessary to put on a stick of a stand always put nylon or rubber tube protecting an aperture of a cymbal from deformations and cracks. Always use felt washers on top and below of a cymbal.

What Do You Need Before The Beginning Of Mastering Drum Kit?

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

First of all buy a good drum chair. It is better, if it is screw, with a round seat and without back. Screw chair provides stable rigidity, being in an established position.

The chair bottom should be round. When you sit down on a chair, occupying its surface completely, your thigh will be in free position, but if the chair is too wide and rectangular some part of thigh will be on it, and this will limit freedom of its movement.
There are chairs, which resemble a bicycle saddle, don’t use such type of chair if you are a beginner, because your thighs will be in absolutely free position, legs will try to find a point of rest, but you should avoid it and do not displace the centre of gravity from one leg to another.

Backed chair will be bad for the beginner, because you will try to lean on a chair back, but you have to learn to sit stiffly upright, without any help for your back.

Height of a drum chair is the factor influencing the speed of playing. Everyone has their own preferences on height. Many musicians like lower position, for the lower he sits, the faster he can work with his legs. The higher you sit the more muscles you use. In a low position only the muscles of calves of the legs are used. Of course, you can hear from different people that in this position drums will cover you up. We understand such point of view, but you will have to sacrifice good playing to showing to people that you are a pretty boy.

You will see that the majority of drummers sit lower because it is easier to play in this position. Try various heights and find a position, which will be the most comfortable for you.

Spectators will see you, when you take a bow. What to wear is also a difficult problem. Casual look garment is very comfortable. Some drummers wear football form. It is dark and very practical. Girls use a form of tennis-players.

Recently drummers, both the beginners and more skilled musicians, have had such a strange stereotype as the necessity of bandanna. It is considered that every drummer should wear it, when he is on stage, without paying any attention to clothes. But you should pay attention to it, because this is your stage costume. It can be jeans, vest, T-shirt, shorts and so on, but they should be combined in color. Clothes are not only things for covering bodies. Mood of public usually depends on your stage costume, public must see that you are a person who concerns seriously to drumming, good costume will help you to excite public’s mood before you start to play.

The Best Technique Of Making A Stroke

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

How do you make a stroke? Take a drumstick and try. Simply play one note. Then play again, watching the head of the stick directly before and after the stroke. Can you divide your stroke into phases “up” and “down”? Another words, do you raise a stick a little “upwards” before stroke “downwards”? If before stroke “downwards”, you raise a stick “upwards”, preparing for it, you have to double your work.

Think: each time you drum, you do two various movements – upwards and downwards. But you need only one movement, it is downwards. Hand rising before following stroke must be an effect of natural bounce of a stick. Train hands, because they should follow sticks. As soon as you learn to do this, you will be halfway of the development of really cool technique.

Playing drum kit is also a sport, that’s why for the maximum effect you should be in good shape.

Every day you should have some aerobic activity during 20 minutes at least (it is very useful for health, even if you are not the drummer). Different weight lifting can be useful, but be careful. Cool technique needs muscles a trotter has, instead of muscles a bodybuilder has. It is fine that you do exercises for speed, force and flexibility, but incorrect weight lifting will slow you down.

The best way of training your “drum” muscles is playing more. It is good to work on technique, watching TV. Watch a film and play non-stop during it. Play everything that comes to your mind. Exercises in slow, average and fast tempo should alternate during training.
There are three basic types of playing:
1. with forearms: increase power and loudness sacrificing a maximum speed.
2. with wrists: increase speed sacrificing maximum loudness.
3. with fingers: increase speed sacrificing loudness.

Learn how to do a full stroke. Full stroke technique gives not only a good warming up, but this is also an excellent training for developing your “drum” muscles. Use the full stroke when you need maximum loudness and power, but not maximum speed. Hold sticks in usual position for playing. Begin movement full stroke with a wrist bent upwards. The stick is aimed vertically upwards. Such position of a hand is not comfortable at first, especially, if muscles are strained. The more you train full stroke, the easier it will be for you to put a stick in initial position.

“Throw” a stick downwards with as high speed as possible, and let it jump. If your wrists are weakened enough, and your hold is not stronger, than it is necessary, inertia of a stick after bounce will be enough for returning a wrist in start position.

Firstly do slow, free strokes with your right hand. Ensure that you do the full stroke correctly; pronounce “down” each time you do it. The stick should come back in a starting position before you say “up”. If you have time to say “down” and “up” you do it incorrectly.

Importance Of Warm-up For A Drummer

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

You need health for increasing technique, and for increasing your endurance and staying power! Is you play aggressive heavy music during a long period of time, you will understand me. Warm-up is very important. Don’t start practice, without warming-up.

If your weekly warm-up consists of running, it’s good. We think that jogging is the best. It does not only strengthen your heart, but also raises endurance. Besides, it gives a positive effect on legs development. We advise you to start jogging, if you want your legs to work faster.

You play better, if your muscles are strong. During tours we do not recommend you any physical activities, because this is a risk to be traumatized before performance. But if there are no performances in the near future, you need physical training.

In this article we will describe some exercises, which you should do for warming up before playing. There are infinitely many variations of these exercises, we will show you the basic idea:

Example 1:
Play sixteenth notes with two hands. Then do the same with your legs. Then try to play it together. Start to play with the speed, which is the most convenient for you, and then increase tempo as far as possible.

Example 2:
Play sixteenth notes by double stroke of each hand. Then play sixteenths by legs as you did it in previous exercise. Then use hands and legs simultaneously.

Begin with the tempo, which is convenient for you, and then drum faster. Pay attention: we begin all exercises with the right hand and right leg, because the majority of drummers are right-handed. Lefthanders should begin all exercises with the left hand. During your exercises try to combine various drums of your drum kit. For example, do all strokes with the right hand on floor tom-tom, and all left-hand strokes on a snare drum. Thanks to this you can find new sounding. The basic idea consists in playing with legs as well as you can do it with hands. Eventual result is rhythmical and high-speed playing with legs.

Remember that it is very important to begin playing of exercises from tempo, with which you can play very accurately, and then increase it. Also during exercises imagine how this will sound in your parties.

Sitting in front of notes and examining almost anything is useful, but, in our opinion, it is very monotonous and uninteresting pastime, which can lead to disappearance of desire to become a cool drummer! Playing any exercises or listening to a song, try to memorize a manner of game, to imagine, how to play it and how it will sound, if you will put this part into your party of a song. We really think that this is very entertaining.

You Want To Play Drums, But You Are Not Ambidexter. What To Do?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The most effective exercises for coordination have nothing to do with drumming.

There are not so many lucky men, who are born ambidexters. There are such people, who are able to use both hands equally well. The majority of us are dextromanual and right-footed or, not so often, are sinistromanual and left-footed. Some of us are dextromanual but left-footed, or on the contrary right-footed but sinistromanual. Nevertheless, in any case, it is not too difficult to learn ambidexterity, you only must know some simple methods. One can do these exercises anywhere, and it is not necessary to have drums for it.

Behave unnaturally.

If you are a right-handed person from birth, use your left hand, and if you are the lefthander, use only the right one. What for? This will help you to train hands. Do practically everything that you usually do with your “basic” hand by another hand. We do not recommend you only to shave or fence. Begin with simple and safe operations: open the door, eat an apple, and peel a banana with the weak hand. Playing cards hold a pack in this hand. Try also to write with the weak hand, but do not expect that somebody will be able to read this (at least, at the beginning). Try to hurl a tennis ball with the weak hand, play pitch-and-toss, tennis or skittles alley (but it should play for love) with the help of it.

Then we advise you to learn a rhythm. The whole point is that the right hand, the left hand and the right foot hold one rhythm, but play different musical pattern.

It is possible to train on improvised means. Sit down on a chair, put hands in front of yourself in crisscross manner, hands must be bent in elbows on 90 degrees, right hand must lie over left. Right hand will beat on a cymbal; left hand will beat on a drum. Right foot must be bent in a knee orthogonally.

There are 4 bars in a composition. There are 4 beats in a bar. Listen to any modern song and you will hear how a musician drums 16 beats in 4 bars on a cymbal. You should learn at first to force you right hand drum these beats regularly. Count mentally from one to four. Every bar must last one and a half of a second. And these seconds will be divided by 4 beats.

The full cycle is “one – two – three – four”//”one – two – three – four”//”one – two –three – four”//”one – two – three – four”, and then the same from the start.

Then use bass drum. It will be easy for you to combine bass drum and cymbals. Then left hand beats a working drum. And only then you will fill what is the most difficult for beginning drummers. It is necessary to learn to beat with the right hand 16 beats in a bar non-stop, beating a drum with the left hand at the same time. If you can do this, everything will be ok in your future as a drummer.

Drums are known human history from ancient times. Thus It is not surprising that lots of people are eager to play drums. If you still can not play drums then go to this site – it is the very place online which offer you rudiments and where you can obtain the materials. What Is Quadrilateral Coordination Of A Drummer?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Of course, you know that drumming skills have their specific character. Playing drums needs more coordination, than playing any other instrument. Drumming is a ride-set on cymbals by one hand and absolutely different rhythm on a small drum by another hand, third set by foot on a bass drum and by another foot on High-hat or second bass drum. Between these sets you can think about how these sets sound together, simultaneously sight-reading music. So drummers do six acts simultaneously, but there is a term “quadrilateral coordination” and we will use it.

Drummers need better coordination, than other musicians do, but it is easy to get coordination, if you know a secret. We want to tell you about basic exercises on quadrilateral coordination.

If you want to do this exercise, you should know how to play different durations to the sixteenth notes. If you can’t, firstly learn to read music.

Following exercise is better to play sitting at the drum kit, if it is impossible, take sticks and a folding-chair. Put the chair on a firm floor (it is better on tiled or parquet floor) and play on right chair-leg as on a cymbal, on left chair-leg as on a small drum, and also stamp your foot. Are you ready?

Begin with playing quarter notes with your right foot. Follow a rhythm with your right foot, and then start to play eighth in the same rhythm with your left foot. This is a two-sided coordination. Then start to play the eighth triplets by the left stick simultaneously with feet’s sets. It is a trilateral coordination. And here comes the most difficult.

While going on playing of three previous parts, add playing sixteenths by the right stick. Now you get “quadrilateral coordination”. Lend an attentive ear to each part to assure you play it correctly and you have pentalateral coordination. You can also try to get hexahedral coordination: try to read a book during playing. This exercise simulates skills of sight-reading.

Exercise, which you have done now (or at least tried to do), is a basic exercise for drumming, and we think, that this is a base coordinating rhythm. Generally speaking, this is a quadrilateral polyrhythmia, when you play first beat on 2, on 3 and on 4 simultaneously. If you never played like this before, probably, it will be difficult for you.

The best way to solve the coordination problem is to train every part of your body separately.

Every normal drummer should have good quadrilateral coordination. It doesn’t matter whether you are a professional musician with some problems or you are just learning to play an instrument, you should do exercises and work to improve yourself. Don’t be obsessed with your sound, if you are the beginner, improve every opportunity to play and do all the necessary exercises.

How To Make Drumming Technique Better

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Have you ever seen playing of a really talented drummer? Have you ever thought about, how they attain such huge speed, such steady sound and ideal dynamics of the play?

When a cool drummer plays, his accents appear as if it jumps out of anywhere. The faster he plays, the more relaxed he is. There is not any tensity, any effort or any muscle strain.

Have you ever tried to play with the maximum speed and as long as possible? Have you noticed, what was happening? Were you free and relaxed? Or were your muscles stiff and began to brake you?

No matter whether you wish to break a record of the fastest drummer in the World or simply want to get super playing technique, we have good news for you. You really can do this! Everyone can. The best drummer can play so fast not only because he is gifted by nature, but he has his own secret. Generally, every really talented drummer has his own secret. In this article we will give you information about one of the most important bases – magnificent technique. And we will teach you how to develop it.

Find a point of the best balance of your sticks. Every stick has an optimum supporting point, or a point of balance which allows a stick to rebound freer and easier.

How to do this? Hold a stick in normal position for drumming, but your hand should be very relaxed. Lower a stick head on plastic and slap it by free hand, near its head having it to jump. If stick jumps easily, you found a point of optimum balance. If the stick practically does not skip, you hold it too close to the thick end. Move your hold closer to a head stick and repeat the test. If to make a stick jump you should put pressure, you are holding a stick too close to a head; move your hold to the thick end a little. Repeat, till a point of optimum balance for your sticks is not found. By the way, different sticks have different points of balance.

When you drum, think about a stick as about a rubber ball and drop it as fast as possible. Stick strongly strikes against plastic and quickly rebounds, if your hold is free and relaxed. If a stick does not rebound very quickly, it means that you hold it too tightly.

You should hold sticks tight, so as they do not fall out of your hands but no more. This is the direct contrary to how the majority of drummers play. The more loudly they play, the more tightly they hold sticks.

Any normal athlete will confirm you that muscle tension acts as a brake, reducing your speed. The main thing for high speed is remaining relaxed. Other drummers hold a stick tighter for loudness; you will get loudness from height. If you want to play louder, simply increase the distance between a stick and a drum.

Drums accompany human life from ancient times. Thus It is not surprising that many people are trying to learn how to play drums. If you still have no skills to play drums then go to this site – it is the very place online which offer you rudiments and where you can get the materials. What Are Drums Made Of

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Drums are usually made of wood, because it sounds well and has characteristics, which allow it to make a pleasant tone. In general, for making musical instruments other materials are also used, such as: metal, bamboo, plastic; however, for certain instruments producers choose a wood. Some companies make drums of plastic and metal, and it is possible to dispute that it sounds better. Now, the overwhelming majority of drums is made of a wood and we will focus our attention on them.

You should remember: the harder is wood, the better is sound. The regularity of vibration depends on hardness and strength of the material. Regular and entire vibration helps to create steady tone after drumming or resonance, as it is in case of using plastic. There are many exotic types of hard wood, and many of them are harder than those types, which are usually used. But using wood should also be economic for mass production, so, it must be inexpensive, good for processing, and also attractive. If some type of wood is inexpensive, it means, that it exists in the world in considerable quantities. For being good for processing wood should have a long, direct and hard grain, with minimum of knots, and also must be strong enough and durable, but flexible at the same time, because it should be possible to bend it in a form of a cylinder. The same qualities are necessary for an attractive look, there is, for example, structure of grain, which must be pleasant for an eye and absorb paint well.

There are some wood types, which are good for drums making: maple, birch, beech, poplar, ash-tree and mahogany. There are various types of each of it, which grow in different corners of the world. Characteristics of every version are various, but we will not make distinction between Canadian and some other maples; Scandinavian birch and others etc.

Mahogany is the softest, and also the least attractively looking material, owing to this it is the cheapest. That’s why inexpensive drums are often made of it, but because of its unattractive look, the majority of such drums are covered with plastic. This also reduces its price, because plastic covering is not so effortful as painting.

Maple and birch are used for making the majority of high-quality drums. Selection between these two materials, actually, is a matter of taste and personal preferences.

You must know that maple, birch and mahogany have different tonal attributes. Also remember, that mahogany is a type of wood which the majority of manufacturers use. Know also, that mahogany used is not real African mahogany, it is cheaper, less attractive and worse sounding. Any of these materials, excepting cheap Luan, produce wonderful sound, you will hear it.

Some Tips On Playing Drums

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Drums are top-class and cool percussive musical instruments, which were thought up long ago. We will speak about acoustic drums, those drums, which need a lot of place in your apartment.

During wars drums were used for supporting dismounted formation and boosting spirits of infantry. But we will not delve deeply into history, and will talk about drum set existing now.

Modern standard drum kit consists of cymbals, crash, ride, hi-hat and such drums as high tom, middle tom, snare drum, floor tom, and bass drum.

However, many groups owing to their heavy music style use additional drums, such as cardan (two pedals for bass drum), two bass drums, additional toms, cymbals etc. The configuration can be very different. Every drummer should place drums to make playing them more convenient.

What should you buy? There are no problems with buying, but be serious about choosing a shop. It is better to find a professional shop selling rock music instruments. There you will buy normal drums. It is also better, if this shop is an official reseller of such well-known firms as Yamaha, Sonor, Zildjian, Tama, Mapex, etc.

Many psychologists think that trap set is good for stress and depression coping, for directing negative emotions by ruffing. So, if you are often at odds with your family, don’t break dishes, it is enough to bang the drums and everything will be ok. This is one more reason to buy a drum kit.

If this is your first percussion instrument, I advise you to buy a standard drum set. Ask an assistant to allow banging drums, listening to its sounding. And if you like the sound and colour of drums then buy it.

You also need sticks; or rather you cannot do anything without them. This is a basic element of a drum kit. There are different colours and lengths of sticks. So choose such sticks as you want and ask the shop assistant about their quality.

Diligence, assiduity and achievement drive is a way to success! You must busy yourself with instrument during two-three hours per day. You will be exhausted, tired, but it should not hinder your training.

But the most important thing is an achievement drive! If you have it, you can forget about first two points. Achievement drive substitutes both of them.

If you want some lessons, buy a manual for self-tuition, or take individual lessons from a musician, who is professionally engaged in playing drums.

I can only wish good luck in choosing an instrument, tutor and, of course, good luck in training. Do not neglect training and also believe in yourself! Tell yourself: Yes, – I can! I am attaboy or attagirl! I can do this! If I hang in there, things will come out okay.

Drums accompany human history from ancient times. So It is little wonder that lots of people want to play drums. If you still have no skills to play drums then check out this site – it is the very place online which offer you rudiments and where you can get the materials. Answers To Some Questions About Drum Recording

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

It is quite natural that practical questions disturb entry-level sound producers much more, than philosophical aspects. That’s why we will remind you clear, but not always obvious rules, thanks to which record of drums will be a holiday for you, instead of torture with selection of microphones, their placing and balance.

Do your best for having correctly tuned up, well sounding instruments for recording. If you have no such, rent them. This will be repaid not only by good sounding, but also you can save studio time. You will not be nervous because big drum does not sound at all, and small one has parasitic resonance. A drum kit is probably an only instrument, whose sounding depends mostly on its quality and not on a performer’s work.

If you know nothing about the musician, whose music you have to record, try to question all colleagues-sound producers or friends-musicians about its strengths and weaknesses. This will help you to find common language with the musician. Typical mistake is excessive captiousness to mediocre player. Ask yourself: “Will it be better?” Act depending on the answer, but remember that first double frequently is the most natural and emotional. Every next double lost its freshness, and it is great if, eventually, you get flatness, dynamics, hit in a metronome and everything, that you wanted instead of being disappointed, looking on the drummer covered with sweat.

Sometimes, if you found out about meeting with not so good but “very perspective young drummer” in advance, try to have a talk with a producer about the possibility of invitation of a sessional musician instead of him, because work in studio differs from process of rehearsal or concert activity. In this case one or two rehearsals with a professional are enough for saving expensive studio time, your own forces and emotions of musicians.

It is very important to plan session correctly. If you lack experience or you simply have no confidence of success, try to make a session doing technical part of work the day before record, and in the morning it will be already possible to create. So, this is more convenient not only for you, but also and first of all, for musicians.

Every drum kit, recording studio and song (composition) need new approach from sound producer. That’s why technique of drum recording is formed only by experience and ingenuity of a sound producer. If you feel sound image of final variant of product, experiment and achieve such sounding of drums, which will correspond to it, instead of recording standard average sounding and then trying to create something bright, especial, which won’t be similar to other records, synthetically.

If you have no such confidence, buy at least one microphone for every drum and record it on separate soundtracks.

The Slit Drum In Various Cultures

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Drums are often considered to be the most ancient musical instruments. The slit drum was used for communication between distant tribes in Asia, Africa, South and North America. This type of drums has numerous names in different cultures. It is sometimes called the log drum, the wood block and many other names. But all of them refer to the same musical instrument.

The slit drum is a percussion instrument made of wood or bamboo depending on geographic area. In most cases there is at least one slit to create resonance. In the majority of cases there are three slits forming an ‘h’ shape. All the slits are usually of different lengths and thicknesses. This allows producing different sounds when hitting different slits. The ends of the slits are closed to create a resonance and to increase the volume of the drum. Slit drums are usually stroke with mallets.

Ancient Aztec tribes had a slit drum which was called a teponaztli. To make this drum they used hard types of wood or fire-harden the logs. Their drums also had three slits creating an h shape. These drums played an essential role in Aztec culture. They were used for communication, religion, social events and even for war. There is some evidence that these drums were used in human sacrificial rites. Some scientists think that the blood of the victims was even poured into the instruments.

Asian slit drums are mostly made of bamboo as this is a common plant in that part of the world. The tribes of Philippines use a bamboo drum called a kagul. This percussion instrument is used to scare away the birds from crops and to accompany social gatherings and entertaining.

In many cultures of Africa, Australia and some parts of Asia the slit drum is called the slit gong. At the same time the instruments itself is exactly the same as in other cultures. Narrow slits are made in the log to hollow it out. The slits are made of different lengths to create different sounds and pitches. These drums are played with special padded sticks and are able to produce a lot of various notes. In some African cultures these drums are used along with talking drums. The last ones provide wide possibilities for communication.

North America also used to have slit drums that were called the log drums. In most cases they were made of maple or cherry wood. Most slit drums were able to produce various sounds due to slits of different length and thickness. These instruments were used by Native Americans for distant communication before the Europeans have come. Later on European soldiers began to use this instrument for communication between the camps.

Some Facts About Drum Solos

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

If you do go to various concerts, you should agree that drum solos are probably the most memorable parts of many of them. Sometimes the passion and the power with which drummers hit their drums are simply amazing.

Drum sets that could be seen today appeared sometime in the 1930s. They were around for thirty or even fifty years, but never became something meaningful. Drummers used to stay in the background in those times. At the same time they were the most important members at most bands as they created the beat and the rhythm.

However only with the appearance of rock and roll drummers began to become central figures. And they actually began to receive their own stage time during various performances. In 1960s and 1970s the new music aspect appeared – drum solos began to appear within the rock music.

A drum solo is nothing more, but a solo played by a drummer on his drum kit. Drum solos could be either planned or improvised. They could be of various lengths. Some drum solos are very short while others are quite long and could make separate performances. Drum solos play special role in rock and roll music. These small drum performances always come alone and other instruments do not accompany them. At the same time the solos of other instruments could come either accompanied or unaccompanied. Drum solos also do not have to be related to the songs they accompany. And this is another distinct feature.

After drum solos had been invented by the rock music other music genres began to use them in their performances and songs. Think of modern jazz and you will understand that it incorporates drum solos. Of course, they are different from rock drum solos. They usually are related to the rhythm and other peculiarities of the songs that are being played.

Drum solos are also often used to allow other musicians change their positions without having to play their instruments. In this case drum solos are functional rather than aesthetical. And of course this makes them completely different from original drum solos.

A lot of songs are written today that include drum solos. Sometimes these solos are so good that the entire song is known due to the drum solo and the rhythm.

On the other hand we have to admit that a drum kit is not a solo instrument. It is meant to provide rhythm and tempo to other instruments and to keep all of them together during the performance. And this makes the drums even more important and valuable. However, most drummers today try to be flexible. They learn to accompany other instruments and to play drum solos as well.

The Size Of Your Drum Set

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Many beginner drummers keep asking what kind of drum set they should get. Some people think of getting a small drum kit while others dream of having a large one. This question is highly important and you need to make an informed choice. Buying a drum set is usually very exciting. There are many options to choose from and most beginners usually feel like they are choosing a toy. Sometimes people dream of having the same drum kits as their favorite drummers do. Whatever your dreams are we are going to offer you some useful tips on how to buy the right drum kit for your needs.

First of all, it is important to figure out how much money you are going to spend on your purchase. It is clear that a large drum kit with nine or more pieces in it will cost you more than a smaller one. Keep in mind that you will need to buy not the drums only, but some drum accessories and drum hardware too. Tension screws and cymbal cases are something you will not be able to go without. Some people do not have problems with money. At the same time others may put money issue first.

Secondly, you need to think about storing and setting up your rum set. There could be certain problems with storing both small and large drum sets. Think about the amount of space available in your house to make sure that you there is enough storage space for your drum kit. You should also keep in mind that a larger drum set requires more time for setting it up and breaking it down.

All drummers need to transport their drum sets. You will have to go to studios, to rehearsals, to performances and so on. This means you are going to need a car that can fit all your drum equipment. Only the most famous drummers do not have to worry about moving their drums. Most drummers do have to care about transporting their drums on their own. And this could be quite challenging, especially if your band often plays with other bands. You will have to be able to set up and to break down your drum set very quickly.

Another thing to think about is your music style. People who play rock music usually have larger drum sets while jazz players go perfectly fine with smaller drum kits. At the same time you could find jazz drummers who have large drum sets and rock drummers who own small kits. You need to carry out your own research and to see what works better for you. Practical experience is the only thing that may help you in this case.

Some Types Of Latin Drums

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The drums are probably the oldest musical instruments. They appeared many centuries ago and were initially used as means of communication during rituals and ancient ceremonies. People who lived in jungle sent messages to their relatives or to friendly tribes by the means of drums. Latin drums were also used in a similar manner long time ago.

A drum is not only the oldest musical instrument. It is an instrument with the simplest structure as well. And that is why drums are found all over the world, just like music is. Today drums from different cultures could be included into a single drum set. The globalization allows musicians in all parts of the world mixing drums and other percussion instruments in their drum sets. For example, Latin drums and African drums are widely heard in Europe and Northern America and in most western songs.

The Cuban music is gaining its popularity over the last years. And this in turn makes Latin music more and more popular. For example, the samba and the salsa are more and more often played in the Western World. Latin percussion instruments such as timbales, bongos and congas are becoming more and more popular today.

The most popular Latin percussion instruments are cajon, conga, timbales and bongo. The list of Latin instruments is much longer and includes castanets, blocks, cowbells, maracas, tambourines, pandeiro, tubanos and many more than that. All these instruments are great for drummers who want to customize their drum sets. Most drummers today have instruments from various parts of the globe in their drum sets. A good collection of such instruments could create wonderful music.

Bongo is a small and lightweight musical instrument. It is one of the most popular ones among the Latin drummers. Cajon is known for its snare effect. Either hands or brushes are used to play this instrument. And in most cases it is located in the floor when being played. Blocks are played with the hands. They come in three major variants which are made of wood. Cowbells usually come in pairs. However, some drummers want to use more than two cowbells in their music as these instruments sound really great. Cowbells are usually played with special sticks. If you want to have a stylish drum set, then think of getting maracas. They are supposed to be played with both hands. These instruments have distinct sound and that is why they are favored by many drummers.

Of course, it is hardly possible to use all these Latin instruments in a single drum set. That is why try to make a smart choice according to your personal needs and the type of music you are playing. Any Latin instrument could enhance the sound of your drum set.

Practicing Drums Despite The Lazy Mood

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Many people who are trying to learn something often lack focus. I am sure you could remember the times when you were supposed to be practicing your drums, but were not able to start doing it. This is exactly what I am talking about.

Many people face this problem sooner or later. There will be many situations when you will just want to watch TV or read a book instead of practicing your drums. Many people do not feel like doing anything hard after the day of hard work or at the weekends. However, if you want to learn to play the drums you need to take it seriously.

Try to think about the songs you are going to play or about the drum tracks you are going to record. Think of all the people who are going to hear your music. You definitely want your songs to sound perfect, don’t you? These thoughts are usually able to lift up you motivation.

Many people are willing to use any excuse for not doing something. Not being in the right mood is often a good excuse for not practicing or not going something you have to. However, if you want to be a responsible person and feel that you have certain responsibilities, you should never pay attention to what kind of mood you are at. If there are things that have to be done, you need to do them as good as you can no matter what your current mood is. You need to find your own ways of getting into the right mood!

Danny Brown suggests the following technique of getting into the right mood for drumming. The main idea of it is to change your way of thinking. Your mood and your feelings could follow your thoughts. That is why by changing your thoughts you could change your feelings.

Try to clear your head of all the noises and thoughts you currently have. Try to focus on music you are about to play. You could do this on your way to your class or your practicing room. Try to listen to the music you are going to play in your head. You could begin to tap your hands or your feet. In most cases you will need only a few minutes to get focused and to really feel the music from the inside.
